i appreciate all the input guys and i think i am going with the atrix. my roomate got the galaxy S and my girlfriend and i were jealous, then the inspire came out like a week later and some videos showing off HTC sense sold us. then of course the atrix comes out. im a power hungry user and like to make my hardware last as long as possible so the dual core AND extended battery life, as well as promises for updates make the Atrix seem like a better choice.
i found that you can get the Atrix from Amazonmobile for 150 dollars if your line qualifies for an upgrade, so at 50 dollors more than the inspire i think it will be a great choice.

lol i just had to call an audible. i was going for the atrix since amazon has it for 150 dollars (200 from att) but now i noticed that they have the inspire for 70 dollars so i had to go for it. such a good deal! in fact they have the samsung galxy s for att at .01 dollars and my roommate just bought it for 150. i talked to amazonwireless support and got this useful info on upgraded through them:

if you purchase a hardware upgrade for an existing line, amazon honors the warranty for 30 days after which AT&T takes over for the rest of the standard warranty.

secondly, you can get your upgrade sooner! example: my upgrade isn't eligible until the 28th of this month, but ATT tries to promote sales through amazon by giving them grace periods. i don't know how far they will bend but i was able to make a purchase and have it approved by entering my wireless number and last name. the phone will be in my hands and in use before the 28th (2 day shipping free for all phones so should be here on or before the 25th) and i paid less than AT&Ts upgrade price on the hardware. (70 dollars versus 100 dollars.)

i'm very happy here.
i rewatched that amazing htc sence promo video

again and realized that i want a phone not a little computer, and i have heard the inspire is very responsive as it is. i trust htc more than motorolla anyway although the atrix does like BA.

The Atrix is already rooted, by the way. All of my bloatware is gone. Moto also promised upgrades to Gingerbread soon on it.

The most noticeable thing right off the bat is how amazingly awesome the battery life on the Atrix is. I couldn't make it through the day on the Inspire, and I know what I'm doing as far as making sure I don't have useless crap running in the background. 1230mAh battery is so small, especially for a 4.3" screen. That totally killed the Inspire for me.
Agree 100%. I unplugged at 7am, it's 10:40pm and I'm still over 70%. Outstanding battery life, very fast, high res and will only get better as the software catches up.

Atrix all day or wait for the bionic!

Inspire all the way! Like others have said, the Atrix is very much locked down by Motorola.

You can take advantage of all the DesireHD ROMs, which will include Gingerbread very soon AFAIK, motorola has not promised a Gingerbread update in the near future

You won't miss the dual core processor, Android 2.2/2.3 were designed for single core phones. Do you have a use for the front facing camera?
