I've heard nothing but good things about the AD700s and have been considering them or the Sennheiser HD555s myself. Regarding surround, generally headphones use various techniques to make it seem like something's behind you, even though there is only one speaker in each ear.

Each set of headphones on the market is generally tweaked for a particular style of music, so one may not be as best for techno/rap/etc. as another, but in general, any of these higher end headphones will give you a very positive experience.

music is good. since theyre open backs, it lacks bass.

sound leaks out if you use loud volume ( i dont and you shouldn't )
Sound leaks in, i can hear what my gf is doing/saying clearly with them on. I like that, but im weird, im sure most people dont like that.

for gaming, theyre phenomenal. pretty much recommended by most gamers. comfy too

Fantastic for gaming, not so great for bass though. Overall, a great pair of headphones.

Edit:
You should consider getting a sound card.

Yes, buy em'. I love my pair. Absolutely amazing for gaming as long as you don't mind the lack of bass (which is honestly better for gaming imo).

As mentioned above, you should get a sound card. I have the ASUS Xonar DG in my LAN rig, and it's a great budget sound card.

A sound card is not a recomondation here it is required. Trust me on this. With onboard they will sound no better then a set of $30 headphones.

I have the Auzentech Bravura 7.1 and absolutely love it! This combo excells at everything I throw at it from games to movies and music.

The bass is definately not low on these, especialy if you adjust it through the EQ. However it is not boomy.

To give an example of the bass here are some personal tests I have done :
- Ironman 2 (Expo kick off and Monaco scenes)
- LotR (Balrog)
- Bulletstorm
- Many other games from MMO's to FPS and Strategy.

With a bit of tuning these headphones performed extremely well. The Balrog scene is my peticular favorite as it can bring any system to its knees with little effort and it provides a very wide range of sounds (deep bass from footsteps, high pitched crack of the whip, detail all the way through the crackling in its roar).

While headphones similar to Beyerldynamic and some Shure's may offer more bass the clarity might be a little different as well as the type of sound will change as well. The AD-AH700's have a incredibly well balanced sound and are crystal clear. Comfortable as all hell and will not cause much discomfort over extended usage. Only thing to note is that you will need to get used to how they sit on your head. They have a "One size fits all" style to them that actualy works but can be slightly awkward at first. It drove me insane for the first couple of days, even to the point I was debating on ditch them. Stick it out this time period and trust me you will not be disapointed with these headphones.

JUST MAKE SURE YOUR SOUNDCARD HAS A HEADPHONE AMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck and hope this helps.

I was with Magariz until he said "JUST MAKE SURE YOUR SOUNDCARD HAS A HEADPHONE AMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

The AD700s will not benefit whatsoever with an amp.

If you're considering getting the AD700s, get it for the following reasons and these following reasons ONLY.

1) Gaming
2) Classical, Vocal, Orchestral, Bass-less electronica.

There is sadly no use for these headphones for any other reason. In terms of music in general, I have to say they're not great. Anything with bass and you will be rather disappointed. I'm not saying there is NO bass. There's just barely ANY bass at all. On a scale of 1-10 it's like a 2 on bass. Really.

These have an awesome sound stage though and hearing foot steps is very easy.

I would personally recommend you go with a Xonar DX at least. You will be highly disappointed if you stick with on board sound. The clarity in footsteps from on board to a soundcard is light night and day.

If you're looking to listen to music as well, you should consider other options. While the A700s do give you slightly better bass, they're not as bassy as many people assume. They're actually pretty bass light as well. It's just compared to the AD700s, they're like a 4 on the bass scale compared to a 2 from the AD's.

Modding RX700s is another option. You'll have nice mids and highs with bass to power music. They're super ridiculously cheap as well and that'll help you put more into a sound card which will be your largest investment. If you name a price range I can help you choose headphones. I just need to know what you really want these headphones for.

I bought the AD700s for gaming strictly. I knew what I was getting into. I also use them for classical music and they're nice.
