Thread Starter
My computer just blew up, I had an ASUSP5E3 Deluxe/WiFi-AP@n that just stopped working. The parts left over from this fiasco are 2 Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB, Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 (8M Cache, 2.40 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB), 4 patriot memory sticks pdc34g1333elk (ddr3 1333mhz 9-9-9-24), 2 Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 1.5Gb/s 3.5", Thermaltake Symphony Mini CL-W0077, and Lian-Li Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case PC-B70. I do not have a lot of money to to upgrade to different chipsets or videocards. just have enough money for a new motherboard. Any suggestions on what new motherboard to buy?

Thank you,

Ivanopochtli

Hmmm,
Socket 775 boards supporting DDR3 and CF setups a little hard to find nowadays...my advice is that you buy a good used board, or a new cheap one to assure you for some months and then buy a new CPU and Motherboard, Sandy-Bridge o Bulldozer if worthy.

I saw this new board, but i don't believe it to be in any way better than your older P5E3.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...612&CatId=4658

When new SB chipsets are out, and it will be possible to buy those CPUs and respective boards, for about 350-400 dollars you will have a far beter system than your current one, and there is no need to change any other parts.

EDIT: i posted that board cuz tigerdirect said Crossfire Support, but i'm guessing that they're wrong...
I can't find boards for sale with Crossfire support...
Find one used or buy one reallay cheap and save for an upgrade

So Matroska, if I scrounge around for more money say about $450 or so. What motherboard and chipset do you recommed or suggest for that kind of money, plus, can I still be able to use the rest of the current parts that I have? I do not want to get trapped in buying more and more parts just because i got new ones.

If you manage to get $450 i would recommend that you buy a new CPU, a i5-2500K, and a new board with a P67 chipset, or other that will come out soon for the same socket 1155.
The i5-2500K is selling for about $230, and you would have about $200 to spend on a good board CF capable, or even a board + aftermarket HS to take it to 5GHz.
The sad thing is that for these CPUs and boards it is advise that one should wait until Intel solves the Chipset issue with their Sata 3Gbs ports on the P67/H67 chipsets and there aren't boards for sale now. But they will be in about a month or so...

I'm glad i could help

As for now, any 2nd generation i5 will outperform any Phenom II, either X4 or X6, at their stock setting in most of the applications. The new i5-2500K is a little more expensive than its AMD competitor, Phenom II X6 1090T but it is well spent money. However, AMD is launching their new CPUs, Bulldozer, by the time Intel is releasing their new and revised chipset for the Sandy-Bridge platform, so, if you are considering to upgrade CPU and motherboard, it it highly recommended that you wait until Bulldozer is launched and properly tested to see if it is more worth the buy than the 2nd generation i5s.

If i were on your shoes i would buy a cheap board to seat your CPU, RAM and one of those 2900XT and hang on for a month or so to the release of new revised P67 chipset and Bulldozer, they will be out at almost the same time. If you do have another system you can use until then, you shouldn't be buying a board and maybe save the money for later, and sell the CPU or buying a cheap mobo and still use it as file server or backup machine.
If you can put 450$ towards an upgrade, i say hang on a little and buy a Sandy-Bridge or a Bulldozer if it turns out to be better.

BTW, if you don't know it yet, the i5-2500K and i7-2600K are unlocked chips that can easily go up to 4.5GHz on air. the 2500K is a quad-core running four threads with a L3 cache of 6MB, while the 2600K is quad-core running 8 threads and L3 cache of 8MB

Hi Ivanopochtli, is your mobo still under warranty? If so, RMA it.
