Asus DVD+RW: $18

Antec Three Hundred Black Case: $60

Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB: $40

AsRock M3A770DE AM3 Motherboard: $60

Antec EarthWatts EA-380D Power Supply: $45
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371033

G.Skill NS 4GB DDR3 1333MHz: $40
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231396

AMD Phenom II X4 820 (Deneb): $105
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103824

Cooler Master Hyper TX3 CPU Cooler: $20
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103064

AMD Radeon HD 5670:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102871

Subtotal: $470
Total: $488
thats actually a really good build, I still like my first recommendation but this is a great second

lol_wut_axel's build is okay but lose the generic 1333 CL9 RAM. If I wasn't at school I could find you a better choice for same/better price in a heartbeat. Also I'd take the HEC Blitz, $20 less and with similar build quality, over Antec 300 due to lack of cable management.

There's no difference in performance between DDR3 1333MHz at CAS 9 timings and 2000MHz RAM. It's gotten great reviews, so why not use it? Is there any point in wasting $10 more to get the same thing?

I chose the Antec Three Hundred because it looks understated and simple. The HEC Blitz, I feel, looks too over-the-top since it's for the OP's mom. I don't think she'd like staring at blue lights.

Don't like the RAM? Fine, take a look at this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231277

Don't expect a difference in performance, though.

Yes, I have. Many times, actually. I used to shell out money for RAM that was supposedly "higher performance". After reading the difference in real-world applications, I stopped doing so. The most difference 2000MHz RAM does in comparison to 1333MHz is 2%. 2 fricking percent.

Are you telling me you're willing to pay double to get 2% more?

1333 CL9 is prebuilt RAM and will hold back overclocks on non-unlocked multi systems, or otherwise not be most optimal for performance. LOL_Wut_Axel you are on an Intel platform. We assure you, AMD/AM3 shows fair performance gain with higher speed/lower timings as well as very big performance gain from raising NB clock.

I agree with Rosewill Destroyer being unbeatable actually, it's fairly similar to HEC Blitz but I'd consider it as having slightly superior build quality. For the same price I'd be all over it.

As for a decent RAM choice... Kingston HyperX Blu 1600 CL9. $45 after promo code EMCKHHH42, $20 AR. That's right, $20 AR. Half the price of all the generic RAM on the market. MUCH better, and if ever this one is a very decent overclocker and can reach 1600 CL7-8-7 or 2000 CL9.

He's building a PC for his mother.. your worried about holding back OCs with budget memory? lol

The HyperX stuff has already sold out anyways, oh well.... that was fast

That's $475 shipped. Not a bad machine there. Could use the other $25 for a CPU cooler, but if this is just for your mom I'd leave it on the stock fan at stock speeds.

did you need windows? Keyboard? Mouse? or anything else in the $500 budget or just the basic 8 component machine?
