Quadro is not an option at this time.

you might want to gather some information about the poor fermi performance in 3d apps.

the fermi architecture has a hardware restriction when it comes to 2sided faces and will perform very very bad.

i also wanted to upgrade my old 9800GTX but as i had (yes had) a GTX470 at work to see that the performance is not even close to the 9800GTX i had to rethink my upgrade choice.
NOTE: i need 2 sided for the work i do so if you can work with 1sided only it might not be a problem for you.

and since quadro cards are no option for me as well i bought a GTX285 today which is at this point the best card you can get if you work with 2 sided faces.
sure there would be the option of AMD cards but their drivers have always been very weak in opengl apps and from what i read so far it didnt get any better...

here are some links where you can catch up about the performance issue with the fermi cards.
here a thread i started because of the 470 performance http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=191597

and one on cgtalk:

glad to provide the information, at this point its very unclear whether NVIDIA deliberately added the restriction to the 4xx/5xx series so people are forced to buy quadro cards when they want to work with 3d apps.
as mentioned by NVIDIA its a hardware restriction, yet in the latest CT (german computer magazine) they tested workstation cards and the new quadros with fermi architecture performed really good there so maybe its somehow a driver limitation/restriction and we might just need to be able to flash quadro drivers to the cards. to bad the last time that was done was with the g80 or g90 chips:/

here the link to the CT tests: http://www.heise.de/ct/inhalt/2011/05/136/
hm cant find the link to enlarge the graphs... i have the magazine in my office so i will take some pictures tomorrow if you are interested.

the single GTX 580 should be sufficient. if you do require more though, you have to go quadro, and those cost an arm, a leg, and one of ur lung

also, invest some money on an aftermarket cooler and overclock that CPU to like 3.8 GHz, it should be possible with a good enough cooler. that should hold u off until you get 2 intel socket 2011 10-core CPUs

seriously, if you don't have an idea how bad the fermi cards perform in 3d apps then dont post stuff like that.
as i said before, it performs good in games but when it comes to 3d openGL apps fermi cards are the worst i have ever seen.
no the 580 will probably be a huge disappointment and should not be recommended without the warning that it cant handle 2 sided faces without severe performance impacts.

When i built this rig i got all the parts with the intention to overclock - had all the watercooling parts lined up for purchase and was waiting on blocks for the graphics cards to come out (had 2 285s at the time), but one thing led to another and i got wrapped up in work and the overclocking got backburnered.

How much of a performance increase will i see with a 3.8 overclock from stock on my chip??

edit:

Did a quick search and answered my own question:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...7,2268-10.html
Peak power is the real deal. While the Core i7 920 requires 213 W system peak power in our configuration—representing a 104 W increase over idle power—the overclocked settings require up to 45% more peak power at up to 3.8 GHz.

Core i7 920 (2.66 GHz / 213 W Peak Power)
Performance Increase
Average Power Increase
3.0 GHz
13%
8%
3.33 GHz
25%
18%
3.66 GHz
37.5%
24.4%
3.8 GHz
42.5%
45.5%
4.0 GHz
50%
95.7%

Obviously, the peak power exceeds the clock speed increase at roughly 3.7 GHz clock speed. Although this lineup is not exactly relevant in real life, it will be interesting to see if this applies to a real benchmark.
Thats interesting. i wonder if its going to translate directly to a 45% improvement in rendering time...rendering is done by the cpu with my apps...

...but i also wonder if overclocking will affect any other peripherals attached to the board in a bad way...aka the Revodrive2 i am picking up.

i get very nice speed ups in render time when overclocking, a oc to 3.8ghz on your cpu might give you a significant boost.
there was a site where a lot of render time benchmarks were posted with the internal blender render engine. it might not be to accurate but maybe gives you a picture of how oc will affect render speed.

http://www.eofw.org/bench/ there you go

heres an example i got from that page:

here are the pics i took from the magazine i mentioned, i know they tested really old versions of maya but the performance difference speaks for itself.

Thanks for sharing that Kromar, makes me feel a bit better about my recommendation of the quadro 4000. I was afraid when you said fermi cards were garbage when rendering that it would apply to the workstation equivalent of the geforce series as well.
