ATI gfx card question/advice

Thread Starter
Just a quick ??? - Looking for most performance
I was recently given a gigabyte 6850 OC
I want to go bigger...
I have a budget of +/- $360
Considering getting a 6970
Can I crossfire a 6970 w/6850... I know that performance of 6970 will down scale, but the oc version of 6850 oc is clocked at 820/1050. maybe leave it that way for a while if doable till I upgrade to CFX 6970
Would that work in crossfireX and give me 3GB
Or would i be better off getting 6950 and CFX for 3GB
(are those options doable even?)
Or get another 6850 and live with it
Or, go for 6970, sell the 6850 and leave room for crossfire 6970 later?
Just looking for thoughts from you guys that are way smarter than me LOL

You can only crossfire Like GPUs (2 6950s, 2 6870s, etc). Crossfire will use the memory of the least amount of the cards (so if you have a 1GB card and a 2GB card, crossfire will only use 1GB on each of the cards). Sell the 6950 and get a 6970 or Crossfired 6970s. Or sell the 6950, go green, and get a 580. Please post your system specs (in your profile) so we can see the rest of your system (mostly PSU wattage).

for one he got a 6850....NOT 6950...

Also unlike nvidia...you need to only be in the same series to be able to crossfire them...You can crossfire a 6950 with a 6970....or a 6990 when it comes out..

This also applies with tri fire and quad fire as well...for example...able to crossfire a 5970(essentially two 5870s on one PCB) with a 5850 and a 5830 at the same time...However the amount of work seen on each gpu might be different... For example, the 5830(in my latter example) would be at 100% load..the 5850 would maybe at 90-95%, while the gpus on the 5970 would probably be at 85-90%...these are just speculative loads based on the relative preformance on each card... but it should give you a general idea .....

However you cannot crossfire a 6970 with a 6850 since they are in different series...

Nvidia REQUIRES you two SLI 570 with another 570...not a 580 or 560ti...

You'll be happier spending an extra $144 for another 6850 and crossfire it. After all, 6xxx series scale 85%-99% in crossfire.
