At 443 you're RAM is at least at DDR2 886, and you have RAM fail which will be made even worse because you have 4 sticks. You can spend a whole lot of time overvolting your RAM and playing with memory timings and testing with Prime95 for hours (before you even get to your CPU, since you'll have to underclock the CPU to know if your RAM is failing or your CPU), or you can just go and pick up 2x2GB DDR2 1066, which will make life a whole lot easier.

As I feared, my memory is letting me down on this, I've got my eye on some 2x2gb sticks of Corsair memory on eBay that would be suitable, looks like I might be selling my 4x1gb sticks on there! In the meantime, am I able to push my memory to get the CPU to 3.8mhz? If I can it there I'd be happy with that, at this point, changing my memory is an option I can't really afford.

Thanks for your help, it's very much appreciated.

Just managed to pick up 2 x 2gb Corsair DDR2 1066 sticks, I've checked and they're on the QVL, so should be good to go, just gotta wait for them to arrive then shift my old sticks! (If anyone's interested, 4 x 1gb Corsair DDR 800 for sale!).

Will post again when they arrive.

Hopefully then I can overclock to 4.0ghz and not worry!

Cheers,

Jason

Slight update, just removed my memory to take pics for eBay, apparently mine are 4-4-4-12 .... so I've set that up in the BIOS, is that any better? Still 800mhz I know but latency is lower.... lower than it was anyway!

Cheers

usually lower latency or tighter timings is faster

when you were trying to get to fsb of 433, did you not unlink your ram from the overclock?
usually when i overclock, i unlink the ram, (ram stays at stock settings) and then oc the cpu as far as it goes.
then i go back and oc the ram
but 2 sticks of ram is always better to oc than 4

I've managed to pick up some 1066 DDR2 memory now, still on 4gb but only using 2 sticks.

I've managed to get my o/c to 3.8ghz stable enough, however, I'm having issues with how the BIOS is handling the memory. When I leave it set to auto, it defaults back to 800, I have to change DRAM Frequency to 1066 for it to work at that speed. I've also had to manually enter the DRAM Voltage, which I've set to 2.2v.

My current workable BIOS settings are:

FSB Frequency : 420 (producing 3.8ghz)
DRAM Frequency : 1119 (this is above what it should run at, but the option below this is 1058)
CPU Voltage : 1.31250
DRAM Voltage : 2.20

Load Line Calibration : Enabled
CPU Spread Spectrum : Disabled
PCIE Spread Spectrum : Disabled

Everything else has been left on AUTO.

Now when I crank up to 443 to get to 4.0ghz, I up the CPU voltage slightly and put the memory to 1064 (the closest to 1066 I can get), but this usually doesn't even boot to bios, I have to reset the settings to get it working again.

Any suggestions on this one? I'd love to crank that extra .2ghz to get to that magic 4.0!

Thanks for your help,

Jason

2x2GB can have stability issues without bumping up tRFC. Bump it to 54-62.

hyper,it looks like you are in good technical hands. I would like to ask what you had to pay for your 2x2gb DDR2 1066,I bet every bit of $100.00

tRFC = REF Cycle Time? I did find that and set it to 60 ... I haven't altered anything else yet. Is it safe to leave the memory as it is or do I need to up the voltage? I will up the FSB Freq to 433, then increase voltage slightly. I have a feeling Windows won't boot or possibly BIOS....

Will let you know what happens.

Thanks,

Jason

PCCstudent: Thanks, yeah I'm grateful of the technical assistance! I got them on eBay for £54 (with postage) which equals just under $90, I sold my 4 x 1 gb sticks for £51 so I didn't have to cough up much for the extra speed!

Here's some results, albeit not the best.

New BIOS settings:

FSB Freq : 444
Dram Freq : 1067
CPU V : 1.35625
DRAM V : 2.20
REF Cycle Time : 55 DRAM Clocks

After running Prime95, one of the workers crashed out with a hardware failure after 8 seconds (first time) then 24 seconds (second time).

I know there's a problem here but I'm not sure where to look. I've altered voltage settings on the CPU but aren't keen on altering DRAM settings as the figures turn purple in the BIOS settings (which I take are a bit of a warning).

Any suggestions? Thanks once again for your help.

Jason
