Noob question regarding folding

Thread Starter
I understand why people use their personal computers to fold, that is a great thing. It's also a very great thing that people buy dedicated computers just to fold - it really is good. However, it is a very big monetary cost, not just for the initial setup but for the power consumption too. I ask - why do you do it? Please don't troll me, I think it's a really good thing you're doing for the world, I'm just curious. Forgive me for sounding in any way selfish, but what benefits are there in buying a dedicated computer myself just for folding? As I say, it's rather expensive.

Cheers (y)

Because it makes me feel good about myself. Using my overclocking capabilities to give a hand in finding misfolding proteins!

There aren't really many personal benefits for building a dedicated folding rig, except getting higher up in the monthly folding prizes. Beyond that, it's to help the cure or get a better rank.

Basically folding is an addiction and that's the only way to feed it.

Personal benefit aside from epeen - none.

You do it just the same as any other volunteer work; you believe in the program and want to make a positive impact with your contribution.

It really is an addiction.
Though for the past 2 months or so I stopped (didn't want to fold on anything other than my GPUs). Now that the new v7 client is really around the corner... Let's just say ATi users might make a comeback this March foldathon.
