Whats Your Favorite Xbox Game! - Page 3

Favorite Game: Shenmue (I + II)
Favorite Character From That Game: Ryo Hazkuki
Reasons For Liking The Character And Game:

Well, it was one of the first real "epic" games that I enjoyed playing. It wasn't a side scroller or blast 'em until everything's dead sort of game that I was used to (both not the only types of games I played, but you get the point). It was just one of the first games that I felt was putting me in the story.

From the first minute of the game to the last, I felt like I was in a movie theater, experiencing everything going on.

The games introduced me to the "sandbox" style open world environment that we enjoy so much today in a lot of games. It introduced Quick Time Events (QTE) that helped me hone in on my reflexes. It was just a great overall experience for me.

Now... hopefully they make Shenmue III and beyond and finally finish the damn story...

I agree, it was fantastic on the original Xbox, sadly, I never finished in on there. However, I was lucky and intelligent enough I got to play and complete Shenmue 2 on the Dreamcast, and it was amazing.

That simply won't happen, it's been said endless times it wouldn't be worth the money, S1 cost 80 million to make, the most expensive ever made at that time and for a while after that, it was also about 70% done for the Sega Saturn and was completely rewritten from the ground up.

However !, it is entirely possible we'll see XBLA HD ports in the future, Sega's going full blast into HD ports of the most popular Dreamcast games they know will make money.

IIRC there is some type of side Shenmue story game being made for mobile phones in Japan.

I know. Yu Suzuki keeps getting fans' hopes up as well about it, too =/. This excerpt from March this year. I know there are other quotes about him hinting at wanting to finish it, also.

During Yu Suzuki's GDC panel he dropped this bomb about Shenmue 3: "I think Sega will let me make it."

Don't get too excited, as this probably means mothing. According to Joystiq, Suzuki put the smack down on that dream by saying it's contingent on budget issues. I take this as an old game maker running his mouth, and not a sign that a game is actually being worked on. He joked that only the 200 people in the panel room would buy Shenmue 3 anyway.

Oh, and speaking of budget, Suzuki said at this same panel that Shenmue cost a mere $47 million to make, and not previously stated $70 million that Sega quoted.

That's still a monumental amount of money for a game back then, even the soundtrack had 70+ songs that weren't used in the game.

I think it would be more feasible to do very high quality XBLA HD ports, and also make sure the games have proper aspect ratio support and have a proper FoV for 16:9/16:10 resolutions.

Or even go the route Sony is, with their HD collection games which take it a step further. That way it wouldn't be limited to 1 system and you'd have a product significantly better than an HD port. Though, Sony's HD collection series they're doing annoys me since the games are capped @ 30 frames to properly support 3D on a 60hz television.

360

And, for me, Lost Odyssey all the way. Best JRPG since FF10, which makes perfect sense if you read my comments below.

It's a masterpiece considering the studio that made it, if you research Mistwalker you'll probably go "oh wow.. those people". I teared up during a few dream sequences.

I have an 1100/1100 achievement score in Lost Odyssey, I enjoyed every minute of it, Treasure Hunter did get annoying....after 211 hours played.

Xbox

Shenmue 2

Wasn't an exclusive though, I played and beat it on the Dreamcast first.
I feel bad about not knowing about Lost Odyssey because I enjoyed the FF series so much (FF10 being my favorite one). Your post was very moving and I'm convinced to buy it. As a matter of fact, I'm ordering it right now.
