Home Network Mess - Need Help!

Ok, the situation is as follows.

Today cable internet was installed in my garage/downstairs conversion room. The modem lies there, we need to have wireless on the floor where the modem lies. Upstairs there is a desktop that does not have wireless, and frankly, I would rather stick with a trusty and speedy cable anyway. There are also a number of other wireless components upstairs that are not receiving adequate signal.

So my questions are:

1. If I use a power line adapter to connect the internet upstairs, can I connect another router? Or will this second router conflict with the one already installed downstairs.

2. If I add an access point upstairs and connect it to the receiving end of the power-line adapter, will I be able to connect multiple devices to this? Or is this effectively the function of a router? (TBH, I don't understand acess points very well)

3. The desktop supports network teaming, but if I am able to connect a device to split up the internet upstairs, will this even work? All of the data would still be going through the power-line cable and thus still be getting jammed up. This isnt nessesary, I just prefer downloading torrents at a constant 1MB/S.

Thank you,
moozy

You can put 2 of these one midway between upstairs pc and one next to pc. Yo can then plug 4 wired devices into each. So say living room wire up xbox/ps/tv etc

You just need an WAP. Connect one to your computer via CAT5.

Basically, a WAP will do two things for you:
  • Take the signal from your ISR and amplify it (extending the range and making it so you have a stronger signal upstairs.)
  • Make it so you can access both the wired and wireless network (LAN and WLAN) from a location other than the ISR itself, this location being the WAP.
Buying another ISR is not an option, it would interfere with the one you have installed downstairs.

What you linked will work perfectly.
He only needs one, though.

The OP will need two if he uses them in bridged mode like Thobel suggested (ie, upstairs desktop<->ethernet cable<->upstairs WAP<->wireless signal<->downstairs WAP<->cable modem<->cable connection).

As for network teaming - it does not make sense when the NIC is 100 or 1000 mpbs but the cable connection is 15mbps.

Oh, I was under the impression that he had an ISR (router/switch/WAP) downstairs. If he only has a modem then yes, he will need two WAPs.

Edit:
Misread the OP.

I understood it as he has a wireless router in the garage and
a) The signal to the top floor is weak
b) By adding a Bridge/Extender midway ie: say livingroom e would get wired access to media area like TV, Xbox etc if needed and would allow a boosted signal to the 2nd floor
c) With the boosted signal he could either use plain wireless upstairs but OP mentioned wanting wired so by adding another Bridge/Extender he would have a good signal with wired ports.

OP wake up and tell us if we understand you

Maybe. But then maybe the dipole antenna on his existing wireless AP dosen't have a high enough E plain to reach the devices with adequate modulation.

I'd suggest just raising up the AP up a few feet first before buying anything to see if the isotropic reception was really due to signal degradation or simply a ****ty E plain on the antenna..
