what to upgrade - Page 4

is the i5-2500K an intel processor? also, shouldn't I have at least 8gb of ram like I have now? 4gb of ram sounds a little short to me. especially if I'm buying a better processor. you guys know best though so I'll listen to you. any suggestions on the mobo? I thought pc-illiterate meant $600 for everything new inside my box but I guess he meant the vital organs, lol.

To get an entire high-end system you would need to spend a little more than $600, maybe 1000$, to be able to buy a high-end GPU, a good PSU, a terabyte or 2 of disk space and a SSD. That would be a killing machine. You can do it for less, but investing in a i5-2500K is a "go for it and don't look back" kind of thing.
The i5-2500K is one of the brand new Intel CPUs, codenamed Sandy-Bridge, and they are currently top of their game, beating the "old" LGA1366 i7-900 quad-cores and even the hexa-cores in gaming, the i7-970/980X/990X, so it is definetely a fantastic CPU. Better that this one only the i7-2600K, that costs about $320-350.

4GB of RAM is currently enough for the majority of the users, but if you feel like having 8GB instead you will have to spend some extra $50 to buy a decent kit ( good speed, good timings, low voltage, overclockable).

Currently there aren't many boards for sale for the LGA1155 socket, you will have to wait to buy one of those since they were all taken of form shelves due to a chipset bug with the Sata II ports degrading in time, but in a month or so they'll be on sale again.

the i5-2500k sounds nice but also sounds too new and maybe too much for what I need it for. I was thinking more along the lines of a phenom 2 x4 955/965 black edition. the prices on those seem to be pretty reasonable and you can overclock them nicely. if I was to get something like one of those, what kind of motherboard should I get? it's confusing since ther are so many. I have noticed a lot of people use Asus so I'm presuming it's up with the best. mainly when I look it's to see how much ram they hold. would love to add more than 8gb but maybe when I have a ddr3 instead of ddr2 more than 8gb won't matter. also I'd like to know what other parts to get while making this. I already have a 1tb hdd so I think that's enough. would like to replace as little as possible but don't want a piece of junk if you know what I'm saying. all help is welcomed and appreciated.

Yes, ASUS is a good motherboard maker, more than 4 GB of ram for the purposes you have said is overkill. Remember, if you aren't needing more than 4 gigs, the best option would be to go for a good speed ram and as low as possible timings, aka quality > quantity. Btw I would definitely get a new PSU, some good brands to get you started are corsair and thermaltake, I'm sure others will help you out with the PSU if you need any more help there. Finally, I would get a new gpu if you have some extra $, an amd 6850 (~150 on newegg if you get a deal)
Btw I recommend newegg.com to shop for the parts

my opinion is get a good motherboard, cooler, ram and a psu. you never stated how much you want to spend right now.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138193 $140
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138303 $90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820104203 $50 -$25 mail in rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139019 $65 -$15 mail in rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835103065 $30
total $285 + shipping or $245 + shipping after rebates. ( -$50 going with the cheaper board)

use your hdd, dvd drive, vid card and case
you can upgrade your video card and case later.

they are both 4+ phase power BUT, they have vrm heatsinks.

pc-illiterate, thank you for the links. you didn't mention anything about the processor so I'm guessing I should keep mine for the time being? is it compatible with the new motherboard?

one more thing: my pc makes a fair amount of noise inside the box. it's probably the loudest pc I've had. last night the guy at best buy said it's probably not the fan spinning but the unit just rattling. he said put a piece of paper wedged in to dampen it but when I opened the pc nothing seemed loose at all. I think it sounds more like the fan connected to the processor. the sump fan maybe? also it sounds like there's noise sometimes like data is being written so maybe that's the hdd. if I go buy a fan today, what airflow level and noise level should I look for? I saw ones yesterday that said between 17-30 airflow and about the same for noise. not sure of the specs that mine comes with.

oh yeah, what is the 4+ phase power you mentioned?

I think that pc-illiterate assumed you will be buying a Phenom II X4, so the boards are AM3.

What kind of noise is the fan making? did you check if it there are any cables in contact with the fan when the case is closed? or dust in the HS making the fan to spin at full speed...
What is your current cpu cooler? Stock or aftermarket?

Read this for the power phase

when I opened the box nothing seemed to be touching any of the fans. I can also see everything inside throught the air holes in the side and nothing seems to be there. I blew all the dust out of the hs as well. kind of sounds like a vibration. kind of sounds like the comp runs at a higher speed than necessary, maybe it's just a noisy fan though. I think I'll pick one up since they're pretty cheap. as for the processor, I already have a phenom 2 x4 so I'm presuming he meant buying a higher model. the one I have now is the 810. I think it's the lowest one of phenom 2 x4's. is a 955/965 black edition a good choice?

oh yea, the cooler is stock on my pc, as is everything else.

being 2.6 and ph2 i assume its an 810. the 810 is an am3 cpu. no problems at all. so, yes keep your old cpu.

4+1 and 4+2 vs 8+1 and 8+2 power phase, hard to explain easy to grasp.
http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/94...y-usually.html
it is lengthy but you can read that.
summary: 4+ power is not for overclocking and unlocking without vrm heatsinks. it is dangerous. BUT, if the mobo maker used quality VRMs and they have heatsinks, it is usually safe to use a 125watt cpu.

if youre talking fan as in heatsink and fan, the hyper 212+ is an excellent buy.

*edit* just saw matro linked you the vrm and power phase linky.

a 955/965 is a good choice, yes, and will be a hell of an improvement over your 810, along with a new mobo and DDR3.

about the noise, can be a case fan dying too...i asked about the cpu cooler beacuse it could be hard to find a fan to replace the one that came attached to the HS, but AMD's stock coolers don't usually have any fan tricks like Intel's
