[Steam] Dragon Age II Demo Live - Page 7

The demo was fun, however, looking at the skill trees, it seems like there's not a whole lot of depth to the game. Also, I agree with the color palette comment, it does seem pretty bland.

Dunno why people are complaining about the gameplay. It was far more engaging than DAO. If you say that you just have to button mash to win, then I hate to break it to you but its the same thing you did in DAO. The only thing different is that you know do it more fluently and have better combat animations.

In regards to FPS issues, I started the game in DX11 from the control outside game and the cinematics felt a bit chopy. So I changed it to DX9 in game and it played smooth. Graphics wise it looks much more smoother than DAO.

And no it does not feel like a console port. At least from a UI point of view smile.gif

Finally got around to playing it. It was ok.

Combat is definitely better than the first. The game looked the same as DA:O imo ( Atleast the part where you got to the castle )

I experienced similar FPS issues as everyone else though. Played on High and got about 45 fps avg. Didn't even want to try Very High because of it.

Spoilerish alert

It felt too contrived... I mean you have two people die within a very short period of time, one of whom is a sibling. So they're going for the whole dark gritty angle which(IMO) clashes with over the top cartoonish gfx, textures and animations. Then there's the combat, this is supposed to be the story of Hawke, who hails from a humble beginning... But apparently you're already a 30 something y/o wolverinesque bad arse tearing through hordes of darkspawn. Speaking of darkspawn, you'd think they would at least add some variance, but no they're still a clone army with identical physical appearances and armors(according to lore they scavenge armor, why the heck does it look the same and pristine?). The dialogue wheel is much like ME's where the input doesn't necessarily match the output(When my bro died I took the "He's not alone" or some such option and that translated to something along the lines of "Well at least dad has company now"). Then there's Flemmeth and Isabella who both look nothing like their original DAO counterparts. Oh and what's up with a demo that is practically 2gb but locks out char gen and the inventory, are those not core mechanics worth demonstrating? Also, what's up with skills are they no longer present? Oh and the camera now pans out less with the top down view, so there goes that if you prefer a more tactical approach...

For DAO, one of the things I really liked were the 6 origins. It allowed for immersion and dare I say role playing? However, now they've taken the easier route of a fixed human protagonist, cause let's face it making multiple playable races/origins is a no win in terms of ROI. The fact is this game will probably sell as well or better and will have cost less to develop...

What started out as a purported BG successor has evolved into some weird quasi hacknslash with a voiced protagonist set in a framed narrative tied together by rpglite mechanics thingamajig.

IMHO, Consolitis has infected/mutated all AAA PC games... You want real cRPGs, abandon top shelf gfx bling and go indie.

-EDIT-

Oh and enemies magically spawn out of thin air and come in manageable waves?!? Not to mention loading when switching to convos/cutscenes... This game is shaping up to be a joke. My advice, wait for the bargain bin.

So no, the start of the game against hordes of enemies is not how the entire game will be.

Sounds reasonable. Guess we will have to wait and see on the 8th. You guys wait if you want, I'll be playing it.

Flemeth looks about the same, actually. I like this new model better. And Isabella wasn't in the first one.

Isabella was, she was more like a side character that taught a specialization though.

As Xeroni pointed out, yes Isabella was in DA:O(pic here). Though not nearly as stark, the difference between the Flemeths is noticeable. In DA:O she had a longer more narrow face, she also wasn't nearly as busty. Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but you would expect her to appear the same considering the events between the demo and DA:O overlap. Still I guess you could argue she's a really advanced shape shifter, able to take the form of a busty firm bodied octogenarian.

My mistake, I was thinking that character but the appearance was so off I didn't put two and two together. In terms of Flemeth, the thing I like most is the change in the eyes, they're much more similar, if not identical, to Morrigan's. Body change isn't a deal breaker. Models are bound to change when you make an overhaul to a game engine

I look at it this way, it will be a sweet game for the console while elder scrolls v will be a good computer game that dragons age copies heavily anyways. Leave DA2 for the consoles and support ESV...
