PSU cable options for crossfire setup

Thread Starter
I am ordering a second xfx 6870 at the end of this week. This is the first time I have set up a multi-gpu system.

I am having a bit of trouble making a decision on how to run power to the two cards. My PSU has 2 6 pin pci-e cables. I have looked at splitters and converter and come up with two options.

1. Use a y-splitter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812198018) on each of my pci cables and then plug the male ends of the splitter into each card.

2. Use a 2 molex to 2 6 pin pci converter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812198022) then plug the existing pci cables to one card and the male ends of the converter to the other.

Which of these is best? Are there other options? If I used option 2 would it work better to attach one of the existing pci cables and one of the male ends of the converter to each card?

I agree. It seems like every other video card company includes some kind of converter with their cards.

Should I run my existing pci cables to one card and the male ends of the converters to one, or should I run 1 existing pci cable and 1 male end from the converter to each card? Does it matter?

Maybe you have an older model, but this link shows your PSU as having 4 PCI-e 6 pin connections. You shouldnt need the splitter.

Weird, their website shows (2) 6 pin and (2) 6+2 pin. The images also show 4 PCI-e modular spots avail to connect. Microcenter shows it as having (2) 6 pin and only (2) spots for modular cable connection for PCI-e.

You are correct, mine is older. The newer models include the 4 pci, I'm assuming for crossfire/sli setups.

I see...

Being that its a single 12v PSU, I dont see you having an issue with either option. The GPU should include the molex to PCI-e connectors, just use them and enjoy
