well I just drained my system (and spilled a bunch) flipped the block, and refilled the system. temps are 1C cooler. ok, not a huge improvement but something, so that answers one of my questions...

it doesn't matter right side up or upside down...your temp variation is from your tim spread

if you look at the block it's completely flat and even...you can put it on side ways and it won't matter...the same water flow covers the block no matter what, as long as your specific tubes are going in and out correctly...

as for the burn marks, these things get hot, it's just some residue from your tim that may have gotten hot and caused some discoloring...they're not burn marks...

the scratches look a bit severe...that's something to be worried about, but only if you're doing very fine tuned overclocking...unless any of them are really deep you won't have issues...that's what the tim is there for...
