I never used it, ever. It was failing to do lack of hard drive space. Seems to be the least of my worries, I think my SSD is failing. If you look at my second post in this thread, I made updates about the winsxs folder being gigantic. I will have to do a fresh install of windows in order to get the SP1.

Well an option to gain a few gigs is to turn off hibernation, it'll free up the amount of RAM you have on your hard drive.

Run a command prompt as adminstrator and type in :

powercfg -h off

and restart !

Should have yourself enough room now if you wanted to avoid a reformat.

Its already off. I make regular backups so installing fresh isn't a huge pain in the butt. The problem is that I install and uninstall all kinds of programs (at times) which leaves behind drivers int he winsxs folder. The folder isn't something to be messed with which is why I am pissed about how big the damn thing is, 9+ gigs of my 29 (32) gig SSD. Its also not a folder that can be moved. The only way is to do a fresh install, just don't want to :-P, which is why I will shut up now.

I wonder if any of the Vista haters every installed any of the platform updates?

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...=vs.85%29.aspx

Or ran the update readiness updates:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...f-04d43fa7b293

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...f-0feefc7ff064

You may very well see a Vista sp3 and a Win7 sp2 before Win8 comes out.

I don't care if it's not that different from vista; the small changes they've made have made a huge difference in practicality.
7s taskbar is horrible, I preferred the old one and I prefer Gnome and KDE4 a ridiulous amount, I've never used Shake and the show desktop button was in Vista and XP as a shortcut that is much easier to do when you have two screens, windows key + D.

Each to their own, I guess.

Yeah, isn't it amazing how people say "omg vista sucks, but 7 is teh awesoem" when they're nearly identical save optimizations to the kernel and a few aesthetic changes?

Vista at launch was received no better than XP was yet it could never shake the bad reputation. Even with service packs that would completely hose a system, XP is still remembered favorably. I was an early adopter of both... XP was less horrible without any updates, but all of Vista's issues were corrected relatively quick... file transfer lag was the only problem I had with pre-update Vista. Once they fixed that, it was golden.

I think the biggest gripe is UAC... they seemed to make it less annoying in W7. I still had to disable it... it was the first thing I did after I ran W7 for the first time.

However, while I don't know if I'd say Vista "worked great", it was ok and every problem I ever encountered with Vista (primarily the half dozen "Are you sure you want to do that?" questions on everything) had either an easy fix or I somehow caused it with my incessant tinkering.

EVERY person that I have talked to about Vista and had something poor to say about it, had never used it. To me, that's like saying a certain make of car, as a whole (take your pick - Ford, Dodge, Toyota, VW, etc), is a piece of garbage and never having even driven that particular make, ie you haven't a clue as to what you're talking about, so that automatically disqualifies any expertise you claim to have on that topic. I always ask them if they have ever used Vista for more than a couple of minutes and the normal answer is "Well, no, but so & so told me..."

Anyway back on topic here, time will tell how well any service pack improves upon a Microsoft OS. The average user will likely not even notice where as a large number of us OCNers may or may not see any.
If they're right though, are they still disqualified? Their opinion means less but it doesn't matter really if they're right. Vista is sluggish and bloated. Upon install, Windows 7 and Vista are about the same. However, the moment you install your first game, Vista takes a nose dive and slows to a crawl. I know this due to my usage of the OS. I had it on my old laptop and then got sick of it and installed 7. 7 was instantly faster, games loaded faster, I didn't have various driver crashes anymore, etc. Mind you this was with SP1 on Vista too.

Vista is not that bad but it's not that great either. >_>

RAM doesn't exist on your hard drive. In fact, they are separate components for a very good reason.
