First Tests to Run for CPU Stability?

Thread Starter
Its been a while since Ive built a PC and all that jazz and Im afraid I forgot what to do.

Also, is Memtest the only thing I need to run for RAM stability?

I'll be testing a Q9550 if that matters at all.

This has probably been beaten to death, so forgive me lol. I vaguely remember there being a master list on OCN some where, but I cant find it.

Run some Prime95 for a few hours, Intel Burn Test for 30-50 passes, the usual suspects . Some use LinX as well

Memtest should do fine for RAM testing. Test as much of the RAM as you can

A couple programs you could use to stress test the CPUs stability are:

Prime95
OCCT
LinX
IntelBurnTest

You didn't mention that you were planning to overclock. Not sure if there's much reason to run these unless you are.

Something like Real Temp would be good to key an eye on temps too while running the stress tests to make sure your thermal paste and heatsink are doing their job.

Memtest is good enough for RAM stability if you're gonna try to lower timings or make sure the sticks are all good.

Use OCCT for stress testing and select CPU Linpak and run it for 15 minutes. that will mostly give an idea.

intel burn test for me, you need to enter the right settings

before running test, close down all running programs.
open task manager, or resource meter
now have a look at how much FREE ram is listed,
enter this into IBT eg. i have 2520mb free ram, so i enter 2500mb ram.
set threads to 4 (quad core) or 2 for dual core
and run the test for 10 passes.
this is for a quick test.
for a proper stability test, its 50 passes.

" I would choose 'free' memory as available memory will also make use of cache memory which must be storing data for other applications aswell. Windows may free up some physical memory from the cached memory during testing but not totally and i think the rest will be the virtual memory as a compensation.

Available = Free + (Cached - Modified)"

running just free memory will help you get higher gflops, as its just using free ram and not cached ram
this should also have 4 or 2 cores running at 100%

also if using an AMD chip, i use OCCT
and memtest for test ram. (to test ram i just bought) but IBT will find any faults in ram stability in overclocking
