CPU Cooler for OCing?

Thread Starter
Hi guys.

I'm wanting to overclock my Q6600 from 2.4GHz but unsure which CPU cooler to get.

I want something that will last a long time, and I will be able to apply for my future upgrades (be able to use with upcoming brackets etc), which will be this year when bulldozer/gaming sandybridge comes out.

Anyway, would love to hear some suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I heard that Noctua gives the brackets if new sockets come out (someone confirm this?)
I think the best choice is the D14. It's around 90-100 dollars so it's not the cheapest but it is one of the best air coolers and quietest (depending on your ears).

Forgot to say that's a really big cooler so you do need a case that can accommodate its size and beastly-ness :] or no case at all works too.

Thanks for the reply. I have a huuuuge case so no worries there. Is that heatsink available in another colour scheme? >_>

I've heard nothing but good things about it though

I personally love my hyper 212+, keeps my q6600 at 28~30 idle and at 56~58 full load at prime95 running 3.51 @ 1.41v. Mind you this is at 28*C ambient with only a push fan attached to the sink but directed to an exhaust fan at the back of my case.

Bang for the buck baby! It's also good enough to handle the lower tdp chips intel has out! The bracket can also handle i3, i5 and i7 chips.

Cool thanks for that, I've heard good things. Would you recommend it over the A70 suggested above? The 212+ is ~$40-50 here, where the A70 is ~$100-110.

This is what my buddy always used for his Q6600, at 3.4GHz it never went over 55c on any stress test.

I'm using the 212 right now in the sig rig and my temps max out at 61 degrees celcius with an ambient of around 27-28 degrees. It's at 3.1 ghz with 1.4 volts in the bios but when using CPUZ, it's around 1.38 volts.

I think the cooler is fine for now but for future brackets and heavier overclocks with the newer chips, this cooler won't do so well. I have the Corsair A50 in another system (got it for $15) and it does a little worse than the 212 (about 5 degrees). I would assume the A70 would tie the 212 if not beat it. I got the 212 for $20 so it's really the best bang for buck cooler.

I gotta add another vote for Noctua. Their mounting systems and construction are just top notch. They are on the expensive side but you definitely get what you pay for in this case. Customer service is great too, you should have no problems getting updated mounting brackets after an upgrade.

I own an NH-D14 and it is amazing. I would recommend the NH-D14 if you don't mind the beastlyness of it or an NH-U12P if wanna go for something a little smaller.
