Wrong...
Phenom II X4 max temp is 62ºC so he's not fine at all.. way too damn high...

Which revision is it? C2 or C3? The cooler has the heatpipes right?
Shouldn't be a cooler problem at all, since i got the same, running at 3.9 atm, with 1.46vcore and stays well below 40ºC in load (not 100% but you get the point)
Remove the Heatsink carefully, clean it and the CPU too, get some OCZ Freeze, it seems that Phenoms love it.. or some AS5, apply it, and make sure the Heatsink is seated properly, get some stressing on it for a while to let it produce some heat, and check your temperature...

Yeah, I dont have any thermal paste at home, after resetting it without thermal paste, it doesn't to go as high any more, seems like its maxing out at 78 degrees.

Ive heard phenoms shouldn't go above 62c.

You're reading the core temps, you want to read the TMPIN0 with HW monitor and in overdrive its cpu temp not the core temps. Your initial temps were probably fine if you read the core temps in Overdrive were around 62c.
67c is still too hot for that cpu
62c is the max it should reach, try to keep it under 55c

I had the same problem ,core temp was over 70c ,i just replaced the stock cooler (clean it from dust and add new thermal past),and add 4 side intake fans 120mm, now i get 52c core temp on 3.4ghz (stock) on full load, and 55c on 3.7ghz on stock cooler. U should be carefully while removing the heatsink, cuz u can damage the pins,i spent one hour to get the pins in the right position after removing the cooler, ****,i thought its over i destroyd my cpu,but now its OK, uhhh.

Cool, thanks for the advice. They say don't even touch the CPU. and I was sitting there butchering it with a screw driver and it still worked.

Tip if any of you rip the cpu out of the socket again.

Get a hairdrier. Heat up the heatsink (NOT THE CPU) with the hairdrier for a good few minuites and peel the CPU off. a hairdrier can heat the heatsink adequetly enough to make the cpu easy to remove.

Heat
Paste loses grip
peel cpu off easily
...
Profit?

Saves you damaging the heatspreader with a knife or screwdriver.

This is bad! never run your CPU without TIM!! I suggest you not turn that computer on until you get some Arctic Silver 5 on the processor.
