Thoughts / help on build? :D

Thread Starter
Been getting a build together so I can switch to a quad core setup, and would love some feedback.

Phenom II 965
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727&Tpk=hdz965fbgmbox

Gigabyte 890gx
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128435&Tpk=gigabyte%20890gpa-ud3h

Gts 450
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130573

Ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231180

Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811144201

cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608014&Tpk=nh-u12p

I already have the the video card as well as the case, psu (more then likely going to need to swap psu as i only have a 600w atm), hd's and cpu cooler. Having 2nd thoughts on the amount of negative feedback for the 890gx (wondering if should try for the 890fx or something better), the video card and the ram. Wasn't too sure on the ram, and may switch the video card out if needed (got it temporarily as my 8800gtx's recently took a dump on me frown.gif). Would be mostly used for gaming - bc2, crysis, nfs hot pursuit, tfu2, wow, sc2. Any help is greatly appreciated tongue.gif

If you are not planning on using crossfire, no need to get a 890fx/gx board. Save money by getting 880g. use the money on at least a gtx460. get at least 1600mhz gskill memory 2x2gb set cas 7/8. cpu/cooler are fine.

Ty for the response, won't be running crossfire. What are your thoughts on this mobo? - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128444&cm_re=880g-_-13-128-444-_-Product

Considering swapping vid card to this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130568&cm_re=gtx_460_1gb-_-14-130-568-_-Product

Which g skill ram and psu would you suggest for this setup? Running win 7 64 bit on a 37" vizio @ 1920 x 1080, & have around $480 to play with.

look at this thread and pick one of the builds that fit ur budget , they are all good
(a quick advice u choosing expensive cooler , expensive generic 1333Mhz ram and expensive mobo , for the games u listed the money is better spent on a lower end CPU Phenom II 820-925 , low end cooler sub 30$ market and lower end board , then invest all the saved money into a better GPU cuz ull be hitting urself in the head later having a 4Ghz CPU and not beeing able to max out games cuz ur gpu sux)

get this ram, $45 shipped, $20ar
great overclocker
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820104203

and your case is deactivated

for the cooler, corsair h50 is the same price
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835181010

$140/110ar is too much for a gts450 imo

5770 for $130/99ar
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161338

or gtx 465 for $142

For gaming builds down in the value oriented segment, I suggest the following:
The CPU should cost about as much up to twice as much as the motherboard.
The GPU should cost about as much up to twice as much as the CPU.
(for AMD builds, the CPU is more often quite a bit cheaper than the GPU, intel builds will often have the CPU price closer to the GPU price).

CPU/mobo ideas:
Phenom X6 1090T + Asus 790X

That's at least $30 cheaper than the board/CPU you had selected originally and you get 2 more cores and turbo-core speeds that will beat the 965 in lesser threaded situations anyways. I don't normally recommend the X6 over an X4 because it's generally overkill for most peoples computer needs, but in this case... why not get more available performance for less dollars?

Or:
Phenom X4 970 + Asus 790X

That's $50 cheaper and the CPU is still slightly faster than the 965

Ideally speaking, you should be pairing one of these options with ~$200+ worth of GPU power at some point in time. The GTS450 will work fine for now, but you'll be more heavily bottled at the GPU, leavings some potential performance on the table. A 560/470/6870/6950 class would be more appropriate.

If you are thinking you might need a new PSU:
Sparkle GTX560Ti + 750W PSU
Great combo savings and great MIR really bring the effective price of that gear down.

Check out this amazing deal on a re-certified GTX470:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133341

If you plan to stick with 1 card, choose freely between AMD and Nvidia, if you want to crossfire later, it will be less hassle if you stick to AMD cards (AMD mobos don't natively support SLI).

Might want to look at my recent thread here on AMD General for some inspiration, there are a few things that could use some work in this i.e. RAM choice

The GTS450 on this rig is a Big Mistake, Please go for a GTX460, it's a much better buy
post #9 of 16
Definitely if you can, I believe GTX 460 is only a few steps up. So unless you're being cheapo and getting it off Craigslist for $65 like I did, go GTX 460

Thanks for the replies! I've got the tower, psu and cpu cooler from the current build so no need to switch either of those atm, plus the noctua cooler flows great.

Swapping the vid card for this (ty all for mentioning that tongue.gif)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133326&Tpk=gtx460%201gb

Leaning towards the cpu / mobo combo that mdocod linked above -
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.596115

Going back and forth on ram choice though -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145224
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145225
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231247

All 3 ram choices state they are compatible with i7 for x58, would they work on the cpu/mobo combo that mdocod mentioned above?
