It is possible to flash 6850 with 6870 bios but it wont unlock any shaders unlike with 6950>6970 flashing. However it will raise your clocks and voltage to 6870 values, i did the same with my old 5850 flashing it with 5870 bios - worked like a charm.

6850 just doesnt have enough power to run at 6870 levels shaders including which is why you cant flash them. Best you can do is raise your voltage to 1.174 and attempt to OC core/memory in MSI Afterburner or Sapphire trix software to reach or go above 6870 levels.

When I had my 6850s the best I could was 930/1120 at 1.174v.

Now you can flash your 6850s with other 6850 bios or create your own.

I got the Gigabyte hd 6850oc version. Does anyone know how to change the voltage for this card? I want to overclock this card but i could not change voltage. Please help me!
Sure, download MSI Afterburner here http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

And you have to enable unofficial overclocking. Heres a few steps to do so.

Edit MSIAfterburner.cfg in C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner

You need to change the following.

- Seek UnofficialOverclockingEULA field and add following text:

I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it

-Set UnofficialOverclockingMode to 1 to keep PowerPlay active (may not work on old ASICs), 2 to traditionally disable PowerPlay or to 0 to temporary disable unofficial overclocking path

Now doing this can void your warranty if you fry your card. So be careful and do a lot of research before attempting to change voltages/clocks if you are not familar with the card.

You CAN flash the 6850 to a 6870 [Google is your friend], but there's no reason to because you'll get the same benefit from simply OC'ing the 6850.

facepalm. but yeh what they said, 6950-6970

The Gigabyte 6850 OC (overclock model) cannot change voltages. It has a different VRM section than the standard model.

I had the standard model (still have it - going to build an HTPC with it), and could change the voltages up to 1.25 and higher, easily hitting 1000mhz core and 1160mhz memory.

Unfortunately you will be stuck with whatever you can reach with stock voltages, most likely somewhere around 875core and 1100memory.

This knowledge is the product of hours upon hours of research on this specific card.

Good luck.
