[CVG]Epic to show 'next-gen' Unreal Engine tech at GDC - Page 6

IMHO they should develop a more seamless Development Kit for noob developers instead of spending time releasing new game engines.

Well they won't show anything that consoles can't run.

They have to max out and watch the limits of those X1950XT's and 7800GTX's!!

I still think the best looking Unreal Engine game is Unreal Tournament 3. Too bad it isn't the most fun game to play. Bioshock had an interesting theme, but I wasn't all that impressed with the visuals.

Why does it keep looking as if everything was made out of cockroach shell?

And it looks as 'muddy' as always.

If the Unreal developers' goal was for best level of detail, they'd no doubt match, if not beat Crytek.

And graphics don't mean jack when Crytek fail at optimizing/programming their games for current available hardware. On the other hand, that's what Unreal developers are very good (if not best, while making their graphics look pretty good as well) at, so it's an apples to oranges comparison.

Well don't make it sound so horrible.

Consoles are holding the PC back in terms of advancing graphics, and we are fortunate enough to have such graphics on the CryEngine 2 and 3.

But let's be quite honest here, I believe that the Crysis 2 Beta (DX9) runs extremely well on mid-range systems and looks great, and just blows the Unreal Engine 3 out of the water.

Since when does the engine dictate art direction and color palette?

Of course consoles are holding back PCs. They almost always have (especially after the original Xbox died, which was when M$ started to encourage developers to make cheap portovers from 360 to PC through use of XNA).

And speaking of honesty, if your sig rig was the only PC you've tested even the Crysis 2 beta on, you really can't speak on behalf of "mid ranged systems", considering you have the (pretty much) latest and greatest CPU and GPU at this time. Most people are still on dual core Athlons/Core 2s and 8800-200 series GPUs, which are currently considered mid-range. It's performance of the final product on these machines that will tell the story of whether it's another poorly made game (like the first one) or a well optimized one, and until they release the final product and I see people with the above mentioned or similar systems running it in DX9 at even medium settings, I'm not holding my breath for it to break Crytek's tradition of not optimizing their games properly.
