Disable C1E,SpeedStep,Termal Control and set manually multiplier to 8.5x.

Then boot to OS and use CoreTemp program for checking the real VID of the chip..

Also use CoreTemp for monitoring core temperatures..

Keep Vcore under 1.40V (under load shown in CPU-Z) all the time..

Keep vFSB Termination voltage/VTT under 1.40V for 24/7 usage..

Keep core temperatures under 75C at all time..

Set the RAM timings manually to what the sticks have printed on them, then set the RAM multiplier so that they are 1:1 with FSB. So at 400FSB, your ram will be at DDR2 800 (2x400).

Technically, you should lower your CPU multiple to say 7x, then raise your FSB to failure to see what your board maxes out at. When you find that max, start raising NB voltage to see if you can get more, but stay around 1.35-ish. Once you have your max FSB for ~1.35V on the NB, you'll know where you stand, then you can return your CPU multiple to 8.5 and work on max CPU clock.

I would personally use 2 sticks of memory while finding max CPU, but people will argue about that. If you're having too much trouble, pull 2 sticks of RAM.

Find your FSB max, then start pushing your CPU. When the CPU starts to fail, add VCore in the smallest increments allowed by your mobo. You should be good to 3.8 or so in the low 1.3s. Up past 3.8 you may need more, but don't go over 1.4. You shouldn't need to start playing with VTT etc until you get near 4.0. Bumping VTT can make you stable at lower VCore, but again this will be in the upper clocks and keep VTT less than VCore value.

So with my bios set at 1.3625V, CPU-Z reads a Vcore of 1.280V. Which value is the one I should think about when I am overclocking? I understand there is a certain voltage drop. Is my system really at 1.280V? The VID for my chip is 1.225V.

I disabled Speedstep, C1E, and Thermal control. Is it safe to disable thermal control? If for some reason my chip breaks 100C, if thermal control is disabled, does that stop it from throttling?

I would say yes, you always run some IBT/Prime and monitor the temp,
and if you run the progs to check your stability and don`t reach high temps
then you won`t hit temps that high while say gaming.
I got mine disabled and neer worry about it, thx to noctua

Thermal shutoff is hardwired into your chip, it will shut itself down before it overheats and is damaged. Pay attention to the voltage measured by CPU-Z as that is what is actually going through your chip. Also, my q9550 needs 1.316v (in CPU-Z) to be stable at 3.4Ghz but I've got a pretty bad board.

My VID is 1.3v.. does this mean that I need higher vcore than others with lower VIDs to reach to for example 4ghz? im currently at 1.35***v @ 4ghz (stable)... I wana go higher but Im just afraid of putting too much stress on the cpu if I raise any more vcores...
