heaven benchmark question

not sure if this is in the right place but here goes. I am currently working on overclocking my evga gtx 460 se. and when I run the heaven benchmark I seen to get a large amount of screen tearing throughout the entire benchmark.

What confuses me is that you typically get tearing when your fps is higher than your monitors refresh rate as the monitor cannot show the frames fast enough to keep up with how fast the graphics card is throwing them at the display. My max fps was rated at 73 but throughout the benchmark my frame rate is at a steady low to mid 30's. My monitors refresh rate is set at 60hz.


stock clocks: 648/1296/1700
OC clocks so far: 760/1520/1700

Tearing is not directly tied to frame rate; a frame rate of 10 may producing tearing on a 120htz monitor. So don't worry, tearing in normal for what you are doing. If it bothers you, enabling vsync in the Heaven setup panel will eliminate the tearing.

Unstable overclock I would imagine as I never see screen tearing on any machine I use. Run the clocks at factory settings and then report back.

Yep, shouldnt get tearing unless your overclocked too high matey /gone SLi in some circumstances, drop the overclock and run again, to see if you still get tearing!

alright I ran heaven again at stock clocks and here is still a bit of tearing. it doesnt seem as bad but its close.

HOWEVER, I clocked my card at 800/1560/1700. Ran Furmark, EVGA OC scanner, msi kombustor, heaven benchmark and 3dmark11 to test. Everything seemed fine with those clocks through the testing.

But then I started up a game. Day Of Defeat Source. Its not the most graphically demanding game I have but its got the fastest action. Played for about 10 minutes an then got a BSOD! After computer restarted I got this message from windows.







Was this because of an unstable overclock? Im kinda of freaking out here as this is my first time doing any of this. Help!

Seems either your GPU or CPU OC is unstable. Running though a benchmark won't always reveal a GPU OC stability issue. I've let Heaven or 3Dmark11 loop for several minutes before it'll hang due to an OC. And from my experience furmark based tests are useless for testing for rock-bottom stability. BTW, did you try using vsync in Heaven? Unless the tearing was scambling the image almost beyond reconigtion I doubt that it is an OC stability problem.

my cpu is running stock. the gpu is the only thing I tried to overclock. So the message was because of an unstable gpu then? Everything is ok now though correct? I didint mess anything up with the video card did I?

And I was running furmark, OC scanner, and kombustor to test max temp and check for artifacts and errors. Ran all of their stress tests for 10-13 minutes a piece every time I made a change to the clocks and followed each stress test with a benchmark so I can compare the results after each clock. After every test everything always came back fine. I then ran heaven benchmark and 3dmark11 benchmark to check for stability but also to compare results of every clock.

As for heaven with vsync on, yes I ran it with vsync on and it solves the tearing issue. I didn't give the run a super close look so I cannot say how much of a difference there really was with the tearing because I was crunched for time. I will do so when I get back home and report back on that.

And no, the tearing was not completely scambling the image beyond recognition. However I did notice that as my clocks went up the tearing got a little worse. I thought it was because of the higher frame rates.

Now you said that you let heaven and 3dmark11 loop continuously to check for stability. For how long? And will letting it run for longer than the time it takes to benchmark help find errors and instability? I mean when I was playing DoD the game ran fine. But towards the end of the round when the action REALLY picked up is when it crashed and rebooted the pc.


So now will running the benchmarks continuously really make a difference in check stability compared to jsut running the benchmarks?

thats what I thought as well. I read that it is becasue the graphics card is throwing more frames per second than the monitor can display. And the "tearing" effect is when the monitor displays multiple frames overlapping one another.

which is where the confusion came about.

wipe all the drivers, then reinstall, maybe give ur CPU some OC just to switch things up, sometimes it help
