I guess that really depends on whether having morals is important to you. I tend to think a decent chunk of the US probably doesn't care about having morality...

Sad but true.

O RLY?

We aren't even the tip of the iceburg. And the US 20% is actually found on multiple sources but I'm lazy and you can google. We aren't even close to the top.

[edit] We only have a higher value because our software market is marked up. If we had the piracy rate of other countries it could double or even triple the amount we "lose".

Actually pirates, at least those who really pirate, don't care if it's popular. If they require the internet, or any reason they need a legit copy, they will buy it. Seriously, it's like the argument that DRM "postponing" the hackers reduces piracy. If a person is going to pirate they will wait, it's shown in psychology as well as marketing. The majority of people who are a "penny pincher" wait till the prices go down, just like a pirate will wait till it's cracked.

I'm all down for the argument, but at least get it right.

Haha, please show me where its in a persons 'psychology'...

Though, I guess I shouldnt be expecting much when you said earlier, companies dont care about $1.25B once they have made $1B, cause you know, losing out on 20% profit isnt a big deal. Assuming a person averages $50,000, how about we take off 20% and only pay them $40,000... no biggie right?

Ok so we're not the wost offender, doesn't exactly restore my faith in the American way or anything...the world at large is still in pretty sad shape.

All that article does is hit home how bad it really is out there world wide. I noticed it also directly addressed the pointless argument some people were making earlier about how piracy "adds jobs" because they have to hire new people to work on security for software.

"High piracy thus means fewer jobs in IT services. A 2008 IDC study predicted that lowering PC software piracy by 10 points over four years would create 600,000 additional new jobs worldwide."

I may have gotten over 50 ps3 games for under 20$ on ebay/other sites but you don't have to use mean names.

As far as piracy goes, I think it's a circumstantial thing and a hoarding thing mostly. When we were young we couldn't afford to buy games, even renting them (remember when you could do that in your hometown? Can't even rent movies here now) ended up costing a lot. So as any tech savvy kid raised with the rise of the internet you went online and grabbed EVERYTHING indiscriminately saturating your modem with traffic simply because it was there.

IMO most of us grew out of that, or at least branched out into the paying consumer market, as we got incomes. Once we could afford to buy a item there was no longer the need to go through the hassle of piracy. I'm not saying this explains all piracy or anything or that it should be thought of as normal or right.

Point being, undoubtedly there are die hard pirates who will never buy anything but I believe the majority grow out of it.

*Goes back to waiting on Steam sales (on games without crappy DRM!) and watching ebay*

You clearly did not bother to read my posts. Had you done so you would have seen that I was saying that people download the game to see if it's good or crappy, and not despite it being crappy. If they like the game they will support the developers and buy it, if not, they will delete it within a couple of hours.

Of course devs don't see it that way, and they think that everyone who has pirated their game will no longer buy it.

You can talk from your high horse all you want, but it's still only your own opinion. You are not in a position to tell anyone what's right and wrong.
