voltage, idle or load? when is it safe?

Thread Starter 
lets say you have a cpu that at idle voltage is 1.5v and max load is 1.45v. Should i only worry about the max load voltage and not the idle voltage since the cpu is not under any load?

When we overclock we are always looking at the load voltage reading... just asking how it works.

I was thinking about the same today..
I think idle voltage could also damage a CPU, but its very unlikely, because with OC under load you have both high volts and high temp, where in idle you have only high volts.
Aslo the diff is usually very small (under 0.1v) so idle volts should be safe by all means, if load volts are.

Idle voltage can be very high compared to load voltage and still be safe. At idle there is very little current flowing compared to at load, and it's the total power [Power (Watts) = V (Voltage) x I (Current)] that's the killer, not just voltage.

Yes Not to mention nearly All CPUs drop freq and voltage while on idle.
For an example, my 3.6Ghz 1.48v Ath drops to 900Mhz 1.1v

I can get my board to drop the multi to 6, but the voltage doesn't drop when set manually. C1E, despite being on, just doesn't work when vcore is not on auto. It might just be my particular board.

A lot of newer boards (1156/1155/1366) that I've played w/ allow the voltage to drop when idle along w/ the multi.
