Windows 7 high memory usage?

Thread Starter
hey all!

I have experienced this problem for a while, but i never really bothered to fix it since i had enough memory anyway. now when i restart me computer, i have MSE/audio drivers/wlan drivers/msi afterburner/dropbox/Ultramon&displayfusion opened straight away. i know i could disable some of them but i think neither of them really should up my memory usage by alot. now when i check my memory usage after startup i am using about 30-34% of my total memory, which is about 1.2gb. i have read some other posts with people saying that windows shouldnt really use more than 1gb, and i really doubt that the programs above consume a 200mb total. is there a way to get the memory usage down, or should i just reinstall windows or is it just supposed to be like this?

thanx in advance!

edit: i forgot to say, but after a restart i have 68 processes running. if that is any use wink.gif

I've heard of issues with Windows setting RAM aside for "Hardware Reserved," if the the memory isn't in the right slots on the mobo. Could it be something as simple as that? Are you using the right DIMM slots?

For you, that would probably be slots 1 and 3. Not 1 and 2, or 1 and 4, or 2 and 4, or 3 and 4.

You're fine. Windows can use different amounts of RAM depending on the system. If you have small amounts of RAM, WIndows will shrink the usage to keep a decent % free for utilization. However, if you have 4+GB, it will load everything it needs, and some things it doesn't, like prefetch data, etc.
+The programs you mentioned could easily use 100Mb RAM, which gets the Windows to 1.1, which sounds pretty normal for a system with plenty of memory smile.gif

EDIT: Right now, with 1xIE, 1xCCC, 1xMSE and 1xWindows Live Mesh, I have 1.3 GB taken. So you're pretty much on the normal side of things smile.gif
