idk if this has been done before, but i did some hdtune runs with my new spinpoint f3's in raid0, did a full space vs. short stroke to 100gb and short stroke to 40gb. hope this helps people wondering about the f3 performance/on the fence about buying them

USING FULL 2TB space

here's an article from Tom's showing multi-drive RAID 0 arrays and the results of short stroking.

And here is a more recent comparison with a single HITACHI HDS721050CLA362 (0F10381) by OCN memeber brkbeatjunkie

I find this interesting since everyone is all about Samsung. Here are two of my WD RE4's in RAID0. Granted they are only 500GB drives each, but I thought the 1TB F3's were faster. lol

Good day:
I hope you guys dont mind me using this thread, but theres no point on stuffing the board with more threads regarding the same product.

Would it be of any benefit to short stroke a 1TB spinpoint f3 to 500GB?

The use of this drive will be mainly for gaming. The OS will be in another drive a WDGreen and right now im not planing to put an OS in the Samsung drive.

Thanks for any answers.

WD RE drives are great but for the price point? I think that's the reason the F3 is king. Fast 1tb for how much less?

Another question independent of short stroking. Would it be beneficial in any way to partition this drive in two 500GB partitions?

You probably wouldn't notice the difference short stroking to 500GB...

So I'd say no it's not worth it from a performance perspective

Any input on my partition questions?

And say if i formated just 500gb, wouldn´t it be faster? my reasoning that information would be stored in the outer rings.

it would be faster but only marginality faster at best and the loss of space wouldn't be worth the little bit of speed you gain

Thanks for the answers guys

So whats the maximun amount of space i could short stroke the drive to get a significant performance boost?

Also leaving short stroking aside, any recomendations on how should i format and partition the drive.

Edit: Keep in mind im asking advice for measures that might benefit games
