It's not that they can't, it's that it becomes way too expensive. The cost of manufacturing increases exponentially with resolution due to the increased number of defects.

You mean the same retina display that's been on the iPhone 4's 3.5" screen for almost a year now? Is that the "30" resolution" that you're talking about?

Also, what was this about people being dumb?

The iPad has always had a bigger resolution than the iPhone? :S
"Retina display" is defined at a displayer with >300PPI. Do the math or the iPad screen size. Smart ass.

Uninformed consumers FTW!

I find it hilarious that you're the one continuing to be a smart ass and calling everyone else "stupid" and "uninformed." While at the same time you're saying reaching the retina display levels of PPI on the iPad is akin to "30" TV resolution on a 9" screen."

Save your stupid little remarks and go do some research on what retina actually means and how it would be applied to the iPad. I'd recommend in the future that you do this before you come here and randomly insult people.

I never said TV. Were on a computer forum, everyone associates 30" resolution at 2560*1600.

Then tell me, if I'm so wrong, what is the retina display?

As far as I'm concerned, the whole "retina" part of it, means that it is indistinguishable to other pixles to the human eye, so have that, they have to be a certain size. Which results in a super high PPI.

The screen is marketed by Apple as the "Retina Display", based on the assertion that a display of approximately 300 ppi at a distance of 12 inches (305 mm) from one's eye is the maximum amount of detail that the human retina can process.[35]

Can you literally not help yourself when you get to the end of all of your posts? Do you have some uncontrollable urge to type a last childish word or two instead of ending your post like an adult?

I am not arguing what retina display means. I know that retina means about 300ppi. I also know the standard resolution of 30" displays. I also understand the math. The part you're misunderstanding me about is when I tried to explain that it's not that unreasonable for the 9" display to have retina resolution (in this case, somewhere around that 2560x1600 that you mentioned.)

You lashed out on people suggesting that the iPad 2 or 3 could have those resolutions. You quite literally called them "dumb." That's what I'm talking about.

Now if/when you reply, I ask that you have the self-control not to add some snide drivel at the very end of your post. I know that you can do this. You are not an imbecile, you have no trouble expressing your thoughts in language. Just omit that last part and we can actually have a discussion like normal intelligent people.
