SSD and iTunes

Thread Starter
Hey all, installed a 128gb c300 ssd not too long ago, and it is being used as a boot drive/apps/a few games

I also have a 1tb spinpoint f3 for storage

I have a pretty big music library (50gb or so) and I am going to reinstall itunes on my machine

I want the music and all backups of my ipad to be stored on my 1tb spinpoint, so should I install itunes on the spinpoint too so I dont have any issues with where it stores the backups, etc as i dont want it to take up space on my ssd?

if I install itunes on my ssd, will I have to play with the settings so it knows my music is on the spinpoint, and tell it to store all backups and all that stuff on the spinpoint?

You can just change the default music folder location in itunes. I think it defaults to my music any way and if you move the symlink/libraries to your hdd it will probably default there anyway but double check.

Personally I just installed it to the HDD as there is no benefit to having something like that on the faster ssd especially when all the files it accesses are on the HDD.

Personally I like to run the OS and a few small programs like chrome on the SSD and chuck everything else on the storage. Games, programs, music...the lot. Keeps your SSD nice and fresh and sparkly biggrin.gif

I do have 3 storage drives for separate things but it will still be the most effective way for you to store things doing it over an SSD and a 1TB drive.

You should be able to leave itunes on the SSD, and just consolidate your library using iTunes so it knows where to point to. Not sure of the performance difference between iTunes on the SSD vs HDD because it's still reading off the storage drive.

Hope it helps!

I install iTunes on the SSD because iTunes itself starts and runs a lot faster on an SSD, but I STORE all the music on my secondary HDD. In EDIT>PREFERENCES>advanced tab>iTunes Media Folder Location: select "change", and select the folder with all of your music and anything else that you want iTunes to play. I keep the "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding media" box ticked. I have had multiple OS installs with this method and it has worked flawlessly.

Hope this helps!
