So I will be building a photoshop machine for my parents when SB comes back online, and would like to know your input.

Will CS5 benefit from hyperthreading, or should I just get the 2500k?

Will CS5 benefit from 16Gb, or should I just go with 8 for now?

Should I run a dedicated graphics card, or is the onboard in the k-series good enough? My parents play minesweeper and cubix, so gaming power isn't a concern. They will likely get a U3011 though, so massive resolution.

Should I get a large SSD to put the OS and a scratch partition on, or just a regular HDD for everything, then a small SSD scratch drive?

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Budget is in the 3000 range, though they wouldn't mind it being cheaper. They already bought a U3011.

Right now my parents have given me the go-ahead to do as much as I want. They replace their computer every 5-7 years or so, and go for the best they can get when they upgrade.

I would say 3000 is probably where they will draw the line. So something like 128Gb C300 is definitely in the budget. I plan on putting a few 1Tb HDD in there for photo storage as well.

They would like it to be small, so I am going to try and build as small a m-ATX system as I can. I thought about m-ITX, but only 2 dimm slots shot that idea down.

if the budget is that big id throw a dedicated gfx so they can have the options for more later on but technically the ondie gpu should handle what your asking. I have yet to see any tried and true members say they only photoshop on integrated gfx so I cant be 100% sure thats the best route. Id say try it and if you arent happy buy a gfx then (if you want to that is).

Since you are also waiting for a board so you can do this build may as well wait for the new ssds as well so that you can utilize the sata6 you will be getting.

Does CS5 have and CUDA support? If it does, I may want to put some money into graphics cards, right?

it would work faster with an AMD 6 core, AMD CPU's are generally better at photoshop etc, get a good amount of ram although more than 8GB is not needed, as far as I know CS5 does not benefit from CUDA, but CAN benefit from having an AMD/ATI 6000 series card for parallel processing. also an SSD will do you a lot of good

id say get a amd 6870 (or an nvidia equivalent) with 8gb ddr3 1600 ram. As for amd vs intel id get a hexacore like jy360 said. Also the SB board are on recall so while you can buy your chip (2600 or 2500) you cannot put it in anything. There are no boards for sale for 1155 and prob wont be for another month give or take.

Actually with one of the newer Nvidia drivers, CS5 actually does support GPU acceleration. So a dedicated graphics would help you out.

The price difference between the 2600k and 2500k isn't massive so its worth getting. I'd opt for 8gb of ram as you can always add more if needed.

yeah...... but thats not quite the same, AMD systems use fusion technology and direct connections to split the work on a hardware level, nvidia drivers cannot compete with that.
