Need some guidance on new OC(965 BE)

Ok well right now i have 250fsb, multiplier at 17.0 like normal, and it's at 4255mhz. Voltage is 1.4(haven't tested for stability, prob will crash in prime95 and will have to up to 1.5) I wanted to see where i would hit the wall with the fsb before i started to up the NB which is still at stock 2000mhz. My ram is 4gb ddr3 1600 and what confuses me is as i up the fsb the ram gets faster, in teh bios the multiplier is 6.66x for the ram and it's currently at 834 mhz. If it's ddr3 1600 how could it be @ 834 which when multiplied by 2 is more than 1600? Does this signify that it will crash when i run prime95 and i need to lower the fsb to keep it under 800mhz?

edit: ok now i'm at 240 fsb, 17 mult @ 4.1ghz 1.4V, 2650mhz NB, and ram is at 804mhz. Runnin stable in prime95 for an hour and running

double edit: crap i see the 3rd core self test failed, is it possible for one core to fail the torture test at a time? Or is it a bad core?

problem 1) ram uses the same FSB as the CPU for clock speed but has its own multipler, as does the NB and HT.

problem 2) yes, more than likely you will have one weaker core that sets the limit. a buffalo herd only goes as fast as the slowest buffalo.

Hm i see, so i made it so my ram doesn't exceed 1600mhz, and nb is still 2650, but one thign i'm unsure of, when something in prime95 fails is it because teh voltage is too low? Or if the voltage is too low the whole pc will crash, because 15mins in to prime95 vcore 1.42, fsb 240, mult 17

if it fails but the PC keeps running, its just one unstable core. If the voltage is too low you'll BSOD.

Gotcha, appreciate the answers, is it ok to leave the NB @ 2650 or should i shoot for higher? Also, is it ok that windows doesn't recognize my OC and still reports 3.4ghz, even though cpu z and everest both say i'm at 4.1ghz?

3000MHz plus is common, I have mine at 2800+
Windows will only see manufacturer spec, CPU-Z is right

no higher than 1.4V CPU-NB

Noted. thx , oh and you touched upon it before, but since my ram is dual channel 1600, and i have the frequency at 800mhz now, is that considered OC'd and i can't go psat 800mhz because that would exceed the advertised 1600?

You can, but you may have to raise the voltage on the memory. It's sometimes best to overclock each item separately so that you know each components limit. It also depends on the memory. Some memory doesn't like going above stock speeds at all.
