Molex to 6-Pin adapter

pcie%20pwr%20adapter.jpg

I have one of these laying around, and I ran out of PCIe power plugs on my PSU. It has a lot of 4-pin molexes, so I found this adapter. Would this still work if I just shorted the black wire to black, red to red, yellow to yellow in order to just use one molex instead of 2? I don't like the idea of 2 molexes, and they are (I assume) internally shorted in the PSU anyways.

i have one which came with my gpu, single molex to pcie. should work

red wires? there should only be yellow and black, use 2 molex plugs to split the load if you have a multi rail PSU but logic tells me that it will work just the same. as long as you bridge the power off in parallel it will be fine biggrin.gif good luck

yes it should still work, no I do not recommend it. you are supposed to use separate lines for those so that the high current doesn't overload the PSU wires between the adapter and the PSU itself (where they are usually internally connected, not shorted)

If you can use both use them theres are reason the adapter has 2 so that the voltage is spread evenly the wires will get pretty warm if you did that.

Shouldn't be too bad, they aren't that thin. My molexes don't reach far enough, so only one will be able to get to it. I'm definitely not sticking this contraption on the GTX295, so it's going to the 8800GS where the molexes don't reach too well.

Is this to run the GTX260 I sold to you? If so the box has a included adapter... I think.

Nope, I'm using the actual PCIe power for that.
The 6-pin pci-e connector is rated at 75w while the 4-pin molex is rated at 50w. The reason they have two molex is so that the power draw for the pci-e connector can remain on spec without causing your 4-pin molex lines to catch on fire while loading your GPU.

I highly doubt it will catch on fire, I mean if you look at the 6-pin, it's using the same exact wires and connectors. Plus, 20 AWG wire can surely take more than that, in either case, it is installed and working fine.
