router question

Alright so I had an old wireless G router that was cutting in and out al the time and had to be restarted. I wanted a gigabit set up in my house anyways so decided to just buy a new router.

The one I got was this at costco : belkin n600 HD

now it does not have very great reviews.

I was thinking about taking it back and getting something else.
A lot of people suggest dd wrt. What exactly is the benefit of this?
I found this router: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-038-_-Product

And also there is this: which seems like a great price http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833122334

Both are great routers with the ability to be flashed with dd-wrt for even greater preformance. The netgear in perticular i have and can speake highly of it and has been flasded with dd-wrt and running solid for two months now without a burp!

Great range, great signal strength, and very easy to set up. O' and i get even faster DL speeds with the aid of my new surfboard 6120. You can't go wrong with either just my experience lies with the netgear you linked.

The N16 is a beast, I've had mine for over a year without problems.

Advantage of DD-WRT is you generally get a more 'full featured' router.

nice! sounds like a good deal. Now that you mention it I wonder if changing my modem would affect anything

The netgear is about 25 dollars cheaper. Is there anything the asus does that the netgear doesnt

Eh, the N16 has twice the amount of RAM and 4x the amount of flash. Also has external antennas (not sure if that would matter to you). They both have the same amount of CPU power.

For general use they should perform around the same level.

What the netgear can do that the asus can't is get you $25 closer to the new modum. In fact by changing out the ip issued modum for my bought 6120 has given me much greater increased dl speeds wired & wireless.
Both routers are comparably equal and both be flashed with dd-wrt. In my book $25 saved is always $25 saved. Use it for modum upgrades.

Please fix, the term is 'modem'.
It stands for modulator/demodulator.

Also, OP, what is your speed package from your ISP?
I'd suggest doing a speed test with the router of your choice before blindly jumping into replacing all of your equipment if you don't even know what you're trying to fix.

my speed package is 15mbps... you think a new modem will help?
I have the ISP provided modem.

what do you suggest for the speed test? speedtest.net or contacting my ISP?
doing speedtest.net right now I get about 8mbps
