Awesome.. this is why I love OCN.. it's like instant feedback.

So, get the cheaper Phenom X4 that is at 3.2? It better be able to hit 4.0GHz..

I am going to use it for gaming, working, etc. I like to play my games at the Ultra settings, and I like it to play with *perfect* fps.

But the machine also has to be robust enough to multitask like a PROOO. I like to have photochop open, dreamweaver open, while watching a movie, while ripping a DVD, while torrenting (linux distros of course), while web browsing, while hosting a virtual server, while listening to music and monitoring overclocks.

I LOVE that my PSU should be okay for now.. I don't want to spend WAY too much.

The less I have to spend on a PSU, the more I can spend on an SSD Raid!

Then get the best mobo you can, x6 and a monster cooler, OC to 4Ghz+ and.. have fun And yes, for heavy gaming -> 5870 if its cheaper (10-20% more perf.)

Even a phenom 955, let alone a 970 is an upgrade. Not to mention the overclockability of the PII processors.

Please dont turn this into an Intel v AMD flamefest.

Sorry for double post, but the Phenom II 955 will hit 4ghz without too much difficulty, provided you get the C3 stepping of the chip.

I personally would say go for an X6. You're getting two more cores for only a couple bucks more. Sure, 6 cores right now is a little over kill at times or isnt used but you'll be future-proofing your investment a bit I think. I love my 1055T as I got to OC it almost 1GHz so far, (2.8GHz-3.5GHz) on stock voltages and it stays pretty cool for the most part. I love AMD's price-performance they have going. I dont think I'll ever switch.

As for the ATI/AMD cards, I couldnt help you much there since I've never owned an ATI GPU (old laptop but that dont count). I hear they have driver issues which is a big turn-off for me but if I were you, I would go for maybe one of their single-chip cards instead of a dual chip just in case there are problems. Like I said,I dont have much knowledge on their GPUs

Hope this helps!

It's not all that much more to go for the X6. Mine will do 3.71 at stock voltage and hits 4GHz without alot of hassle. If the difference in price is so small, there's not alot of reason to go the quad in my opinion. Programs are only going to become more and more multithreaded as time goes on.

A 600 Watt PSU is enough for any Single GPU and high end computer on the market.
A 620 Watt Corsair can power a 580 and a full SB build with room to spare.
He could easily run a 6 core, 6970, and a crapload else on a good 600 Watt (which he has).

Unless you are planning on going crossfire soon just keep your current PSU. Its plenty.
If you are thinking "Ill go crossfire later" just keep your current PSU until you do because in my experience most people who sink money into a PSU for crossfire/SLI "Later" never do.

And if you are building new there really isnt much reason not to go with a 6 core. Games may not use it now, but they will in the future. Not to mention the extra 2 cores will speed the whole system up.

And PSU won't keep up, I think. My 60W Ath + 150W GPU + 2x2 RAM are a stretch for 500W. Phenom x4/x6 is 120W, 6870 is 150W too, 5870 is even more, and his RAM is double. 600W will be risky.
Your config don't even go close to 400w, it doubt it even go over 300w.

Even with the sandy bridge out, the phenom II build are still pretty good and have a beautiful price.
