i7 950 first overclock - Page 2

I think your going to need more voltage for stability, you will have to run something for a few hours to know for sure...

My guess is, judging from what I have seen in the i7-950's on here, you will need at least 1.26v for 4.00GHz, 3 passes of IBT isnt telling anything...

If you can run 50 passes of IBT at maximum, or a good 8 - 10 hours of OCCT Medium Data set at 1.19v for 4.0 I would be impressed... I would have to say thats a true golden cpu...

I will run an 8 hour medium OCCT while at school tomorrow then. Btw it's 1.2V not 1.19v in BIOS, probably some auto drop thing

Load Line Calibration - Enabled

That should reduce voltage drop from Bios to Windows and from Idle to Load transitions...

Ok thanks. Btw it's my first OC on my first self built PC ever so if I go with too low voltages and think that I'm doing good and post it, that's why Don't expect everything I post to be picture perfect yet because I'm still learning Running a 15 times IBT now for this evening then I'll load my stock profile and play some well deserved Starcraft or Black Ops and run the 50 times test / 8-10 hour tomorrow while I'm at school, thanks a lot for your input by the way

Raised to core voltage a bit now as I got BSOD after like 6-7 passes I think. Where do I turn off hyperthreading btw? In BIOS? And does hyperthreading have anything to say in 3dmark Vantage? As most games only use 2 cores nevermind 8 and HT off will allow for a higher overclock with better temps as from what I read

It may lower temps and help with higher clocks, but it may not.. For 4.0 I would leave HT on...

I am not real familiar with your bios, but it should be in the CPU Feature area.....

I realize its your first build.. Thats why I was giving the voltage tips... Pretty sure most i7-950's will need 1.28 - 1.32v for a 4.0 overclock...

Sorry if I sounded harsh about it, was probably over excited Just ran 10 passes on very high as maximum was a bit random with my available memory changing and stuff, think very high was 4096 and available was 4800 ish.

Getting pretty high temps I think, or are those temps normal with H70?

Also do you think I should raise the multiplier to 23/24 and lower BCLK a little or will that only make this bad overclock worse?

Those temps look fine... Specially for IBT... That puts the most heat you will ever see...

Max temps you want to see is around 75c, a degree or 2 over on IBT isnt going to kill it...

Lowering the bclk could allow a lower cpu vtt voltage, but 200 x 20 or 175 x 23 will require the same core voltage which is what affects the cpu temp the most. What you want is the bclk that puts your ram at the best stable speed...

Bumped the voltage a bit and passed 8 hours OCCT medium data package! Now I think I can bump the BCLK up to 200-202 ish and stability test again soonish
