N00b Question: Reported Filesystem Sizes

I have two RAID 0 arrays, both formatted for ext4. One is an external Maxtor OneTouch III Turbo Edition (el cheapo RAID controller onboard), in which I replaced the drives with 250GB RAID Edition units. The other is an MD RAID 0 array of two 250GB RAID Edition drives.

Both devices report their sizes as 465.66GiB in Webmin, which is correct. However in KDE Dolphin, their respective filesystem sizes are being being reported as 460.2GiB.

Does formatting really take 5GiB of a 465GiB drive?

yes, cause 5% to 10% is reserved for superuser use.

you can adjust it by, give me a second to look up the command, been awhile since i've had to do it

tune2fs -m0 /dev/devices

-m0 (-m alters the size of the reserve, and the number is how much to allocate, 0 is 0%)

OK, I tried that command out on my 250GB external, setting the reserved space to 0%, which of course increased the available filesystem capacity. However, in the left hand panel of KDE Dolphin, the device is listed as being 233.8GiB in size, which is correct. However, Right Click->Properties in the main window gives a size of 229.9GiB.

So is there a discrepancy (where's my 3.9GiB?), or is it that ext4 is being totally honest, and filesystems like JFS are including their overhead as part of the available capacity? I notice I get different (higher) figures if I format with JFS. With JFS I get the (almost) full 233.7GiB.

could be a glitch in dolphin, but tune2fs -m0 /dev/<device> might not work on jfs partitions, i thought you were only running ext4, i believe there is a different toolset for jfs and other partitions.

one way to check to see if it is just a glitch in dolphin is to open up a terminal and run this command:

df -h (will give you size, used, freespace and use% and where it is mounted)

and you can grep it to just show one drive:

df -h |grep /dev/<device>

No, what I was trying to say was that with a default JFS format, a 233.xxGiB device is reported in Dolphin as having a 233.xxGiB filesystem.

With ext4, a 233.xxGiB device is reported as having a 229.xxGiB filesytem, even with the reserve space set to 0%. It's like the two different schemes are either taking into account overhead and therefore reporting the actual user-accessible space (ext4), or reporting the size of the filesystem including the overhead (JFS).

the article talks about ssd's, but it pretty much explains what is going on with ext4, i don't think jfs suffers as much from this, but i could be wrong.

and to answer your question, i do believe that is the case, with ext4 the overhead is not shown in the properties, i have a 750 GB harddrive, which after a format is aobut 698.9 GB's, even with the tune2fs -m 0 /dev/<device> and tune2fs -r 0 /dev/<device> ran, it still shows 10 GB's missing, i've always written it off to "overhead", as i've never filled this drives up to capactiy, i have 2 of them, 1 is about half full the other, is about 25% full...

Formatting always creates overhead. The larger the file system the more overhead it creates, it's inevitable. What most people don't realize is that a FS has physical file properties, you need nodes, pointers, and other things to store the data that keeps track of your data. When they say 750G on the drive it means 750G unpartitioned space. Add a partition and a file system, you just used space. How much space? lol I've never looked, but for every 1G you partition I'm sure there is an X amount of MB/G that has to be used.

I personally don't know the numbers and how much it takes, but it also depends on how you space it out. 512kb sectors take up more space than 1MB sectors, because you have more sectors (thus more nodes, ect... ect...).
