i7 990x - Page 10

ok let me show you guys a thread where almost EVERY 990x hits 5ghz+ on air, some upto 5.6ghz.

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=261677

its a pretty long thread.

Turns out 990x=binned 980x

I got mine, but i also didn't pay 1k for it, but i gotta say its one of the best CPUs i have owned. And yes i will be putting it under LN2 and pushing 1.9v through it too, just like you do when on LN2.

Oh and 1.6v is ok on air as long as you can cool it. Just not for 24/7.

Thanks, Sir Overkill.
Yeah, they are binned higher, but I'm seeing 4.2GHz to 4.6GHz for the 24/7 OC in this thread. A 970 will do that.

I would love to get me a 970 with a G1 assassin. I dont see the big fuss over sandy bridge. Why they decided to go back to dual channel i do not know. I will be sticking with X58 as i think its still the best platform out their.

Dual channel on SB is about equal to triple-channel on 1366 as far as bandwidth and latency.

On SB you can run the RAM faster due to the improved IMC in SB, and the L3 cache in SB is faster. This allows SB to meet or beat 1366 triple-channel in terms of bandwidth and latency.

Even on just the 1366 platform dual-channel beats triple-channel as far as latency goes. Since there is already an abundance of bandwidth in dual or triple channel on 1366 I'd rather have the improved latency.

I went quad-SLI which SB currently can't do properly plus 990x should be able to clock faster sub-zero.

I was excited about sandybrigde but I am gonna have to see this new architecture shine before I am willing to come away from a tried and true setup with a decent memory controller and low, I mean low volts for some ppl. I mean I may be wrong but I think mine @ 4.5 with 1.36 stable 24/7 ain't bad. All energy saving goodies and HT on. Temps never seem to get above 55 under any circumstances. I am usually happy with staying below 65 at load for 24/7 use. So far this practive has allowed many mean overclocks to keep perfoming even now. Just ask my daughter, my q9650 got retired to light duty on her machine and is still stable at 4.0, but changed it... (shes five anyway lol)

Off topic I know but this is my daughter's rig, ain't it cute?

Nope maby some good ones but not all 970's will hit 4.6GHz for a 24/7.
As I said its a Extreme chip for a reason, Because its Extreme!

Thanks, Sir Overkill.

i can do 4.8ghz 24/7 on air or 5ghz 24/7 with water. 990x is a higher bined 980x or what i said earlier. My G1 assassin review is almost out and i did all my benches at 4.8ghz be/c i only wanted to use air. Temps stayed under 80c.
