Can't get past 3.4GHZ with TA890FXE / AMD B50 X4 (Unlocked)

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, hopefully you can give me some help here.

I have an Athlon X3 3.2ghz stock CPU that I unlocked to a X4 Phenom B50 according to CPU-Z

I'm pretty new at overclocking but I've been trying my hand at it, I've been using the Biostar T-Overclock utility to overclock the CPU a bit, I bump the voltage to 1.45v and then proceed to increase the cpu clock slowly, I can get to about 3.45ghz when it becomes unstable and crashes/BSOD within a minute or so. I have a beefy heatsink and temps barely get over 30C stock.

Picture of CPU specs:

I tried overclocking with just the 3 cores enabled (X3) and still had the same problems once I hit the 3.45ghz mark

Is my memory to blame? I'm using 4 sticks of Mushkin PC-1333 DDR3... Picture below:

Should I increase voltages in the bios?

What am I doing wrong? I would like to hit 3.6ghz - 3.8ghz if at all possible in either X3/X4

Thank you

To get the best results try to do the final phase of your overclock in the bios as software solutions arent all that great.

As for the voltage i would increase it but i wouldnt go over 1.55V and keep an eye on your temperatures and keep them below 50°C.

And if that dosent work i would just run it at 3.4GHz with 4 cores and be happy with the extra core .

If you are overclocking via bus clock rather than unlocked multi, the generic 1333 RAM may be holding you back.

Boris, I'm having the exact same problem. Built a new system Monday night. Athlon x3 450 (3.2 ghz) on ASUS M4A88T-M motherboard, Crucial 2x2GB 1333 mem (I used to work at Micron for 15 years, so I can't bring myself to buy anything but Crucial), and Corsair H50 cooler. Athlon x3 is unlocked to "X4 Phenom B50."

I've got it up to 3.52Ghz (220x16) without doing anything but bumping Vcore up to 1.4v. Temps are around 40C and it ran Prime 95 for 10 hours+. Can't get it to go to 3.6 or above. I've increased voltage up to 1.5 and played with several other settings. It will boot into windows at 3.6, but will BSOD almost immediately in P95.

I'm about to give up and just be happy with my x4 3.5Ghz, maybe that's all these chips will do?

J-Ro: 220 x 6.66 = 1465Mhz. Assuming generic 1333 CL9, it may be holding you back. However, since Micron DDR3 ICs are decent overclockers with extra voltage, throw on that voltage (and perhaps add some heatspreaders as well) and you could probably keep going.
However, it COULD possibly be CPU. Many Athlon II x4 640 (Propus-die based) hit 3.5Ghz walls. You said Phenom, this means you have L3 cache and it's a deneb die?

Dont use the software overclocking.

Go into the BIOs to overclock. Always try to keep the memory at stock with your straps on FSB:RAM ratio.

On Mushkin RAM, dont raise the voltage. Actually try raising the NB voltage before upping the RAM voltage.

Thought this was weird too. CPU-Z says "AMD Phenom II X4" but then says "Propus" under Code Name. There is no L3 cache. Under specification it says "AMD Phenom II x4 B50 Processor".

Ya I have an unlocked x3 740. I just got it to 3.7 ghz with a 2600 nb and my ram is two kingston hyper x running at 1744 9-9-9-24 and I get about 48.4 gflops. With my A70 corsair im hitting 57c max after many many hours of linx.
I have my vcore at 1.53v and my cpu nb hitting 1.36v.
Try lowering your ram a notch and raising your cpu nb up a notch and tightin your timings a little.

Appreciate the advice everyone, but is there anybody who got this CPU past 3.4ghz using this motherboard? It's very frustrating because the BIOS isn't even letting me change the ref. clock from 200mhz, it has 3 modes, Normal, Automatic and Manual, neither one will let me adjust the clock. Also, I'll adjust the voltage in the BIOS and then when I check it in Windows using their utility it's back at stock voltage?!

Do your OC'ing through the BIOS. Drop the ram speed to 1066 before you begin and manually set the timings to what they should be for 1333 speed. Use CPU-Z for monitoring voltage. And figure out how to change that HTRef clock. Of course you can change it in the BIOS, you just have to figure out how. Forget the software!
