Education is what will ultimately be the deciding factor.

Otherwise maybe build a collection of links/bookmarks for FF so that he's not tempted to follow links in emails or get rerouted by phishers.

Aside from removing the input devices, you can't fully idiot proof a computer

Tell him to pay extra for ESET Smart Security. Fully automated.

Dual Boot Linux and Windows, but only use Windows for games, do everything else in Linux. Oh and AdBlock+ doesn't remove ads, it just stops them from showing, NoScript could also be helpful.

Stops them from showing, AKA stops them from getting clicked on. I'm not sure why you'd even suggest linux and noscript is way to intrusive on everyday surfing.

general education goes a long way. i would actually appreciate it if a company system admin would give a 10 min refresher on general systems security so things like virus's and other nasties can be avoided thus idiot proofing. just my point of view on it

unplug it.

when AVG quit supporting version 8 i deleted it without reinstalling anything.
since the kids moved out no one looks at porn or uses limewire and i delete any email with FWD: in it.
we used to have a saying: make it idiot proof and they will make a smarter idiot...

make it easy to reformat by imaging the hd to a partition, have a problem? reimage it.
i'm actually reading everything i can about this on ocn now so i can set mine up this way.

Theres some people I know they can manage to get a virus no matter what kind of AV etc. they use. @ OP thats pretty much what I use i.e. FireFox, AdBlockPlus, No script, Malwarebytes and MSE. Really simple and works great. Its pretty easy to keep yourself from getting a virus but there will always be those that just don't care where they go/what they download etc. etc. Not much you can do to help the last type.
Its easy to idiot-proof a computer...not so easy to idiot-proof an idiot.
