need help choosing a new card(s)

Thread Starter
Hey guys a buddy of mine wants me to build him a proper gaming PC. Finally.
He's been getting by with a under powered "gaming" laptop (AMD dual core, and HD4550) that he bought from best buy. THe sales person told him it was a great laptop to play games on . . .. Anyways, hes on a budget $1000 -$1200 for everything (monitor and printer too) To save some cash I said he could take my GTX 470 for $200.

Well that leaves me open for a small upgrade.
I Fold more than I game, so I want a good PPD card(s).

I was thinking of getting 2 768MB GTX 460's
or a GTX 560 or GTX 570 maybe

Or even possibly 3 GTS 450's setup a small folding farm. ... . . too many choices need help deciding.

What do you guys think?

better take three 460 (450€) if you want to be faster than a 580(500€).. two 460 in sli are almost equivalent to one 580. Maybe two 480s/ are the best deal in performance/cost you can do, but i guess 600€+ for the vga´s are too expensive for ya?
If yes, i´d take a 570, otherwise two 480..

GTX 580 is a waste of money at its price since it has no bang-for-buck. I don't recommend you get two GTX 460 768MBs because they've been shown to have problems at resolutions higher than 1920x1200.

If you must absolutely go with NVIDIA, then I suggest you either get the EVGA GTX 460 1GB SSC+. It delivers the same performance, on average, as a Radeon HD 5850 and a GTX 470 and because it's a pre-overclocked card, it comes with a warranty. It can also handle high resolutions better than the 768MB card. Two in SLI would give you huge performance, easily faster than a GTX 580, while costing a lot less.

Take a look at this, but at the GTX 470 (since this version is just as fast):

..and i´ve got to add that the OC versions are just about 5% faster.. think it do not mind that much. I´d also look to take 2x 1gb if sli at least to be at least a little future proof.

Get a GTX 480 or two. That's the best option.

Not if you even remotely care about power consumption or loud noise.

That doesn't compare it to the GTX 570.
