PS3 stuck in 480p on 1080p TV

Thread Starter
So I haven't used my ps3 at all in 2 years or so. I just got a new LCD tv today so I figured I'd buy some new games and hook it up. The problem is every game I play is very blurry and has bad graphics, so I would assume its playing in 480p. I tryed changing the 720p/1080i/1080p settings around and still nothing. Restarted the display settings and still nothing. I tryed hooking it up to my PC monitor that displays full 1080p incase maybe it was a problem with my TV, and I had the same bad 480p quality frown.gif.

When I go to my save files, where you go to a game and it gives you that slight preview of it- that shows in 1080p. but as soon as I go in game it goes back to 480p. It use to work fine when I used to play, however now it just won't work for some reason. I'm using a full 1080p HDMI cable too.

Games I tested were Killzone 3, Split/Second, Test Drive Unlimited 2. All of which looked like ps2 graphics.

Anyone know how I could possibly fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know much about console gaming but aren't most resolutions in games automatically set to 1280x720?

Hmmm.....that is quite interesting indeed. Is your main PS3 menu like that as well? (aka the cross media bar with games, videos, music, PSN, etc)

Only thing I can recommend is making sure of your steps.

When you are in the "Display Settings" and you start checking off the boxes for 720P, 1080i, 1080P. Ensure you advance to the next screen and not exiting the menu. From what I remember, when you advance to the next screen after selecting your resolutions, it should change automatically and make sure you accept the settings. Are you getting to that point when you set up the display?

Might be a good idea to reset your display settings using the AV cables rather than HDMI.

I run into that same issue ever time I connect my PS3 to a non LCD TV when it's been connected to an LCD and vice versa.

Did you try resetting the video settings?
Turn off the console, hold down the power button and turn the PS3 back on.
Hold it until it beeps twice.

I reset the video settings, tryed differnt HDMI cables, I even tryed fully restoring the ps3 system. The ps3 menu is in 1080p, however the games always descale to 480p for some reason. I unchecked every 720p/1080i/1080p option and tryed running 480p in game and it looked the exact same as it did with the 720/1080i/1080p settings checked. I have tryed multiple demos and they all run 480p.

Is there anything else I can try at this point? ive tryed pretty much everything frown.gif

again, thanks for the help.

I read in your first post that you said it seems like its in 480p.

Its not. The menu will be 1080p but every game I played so far, plays in 720p and it looks like 480p after you been playing pc games.

Red Dead looks like crap, I think I must be missing a setting but it is running at 720p (what my monitor says) Killzone 3 looked good but also ran at 720p

It's really hard to explain. The text and all that is small like it would be for 720p- however the picture quality is terrible. it's all blurry/jagged which pretty much looks like ps2 quality. Could it possibly be a bad firmwire update or something? Thats pretty much the only thing thats changed since back when I used to play this ps3 a few years ago. (Picture quality was great back then, on the same monitor.)

I looked this problem up on Google and I see alot of people have had this problem, however theres never been an answer on how to fix this.
