It's clearly not up to today's standards graphically, even compared to newer DX9 games (let alone DX11). But it's not like it looks horrible to the point where it bugs you ... not like trying to play original Half-Life or anything ... and it's still a great game
Back then you bought a $40 game and you got your money's worth, not today's 5-7 hour campaigns. The campaign is Far Cry is friggin LONG, man. They came up with a lot of good level designs (and a few really crappy boring ones) for that game.
It really was a special game for the time it came out ... HL2 and Doom3 were the big DX9 titles everyone was waiting breathlessly for, but from out of nowhere Crytek beat the big boys to the punch with the first big-time DX9 title, and everyone was blown away by how amazing it looked, and how fun the gameplay was. I'd never played a game w/so much freedom to approach things in different ways, so much room to roam. It was pretty revolutionary stuff.
I remember they put out two demos in the months before the game came out, and I must've played them at least 10 times each ... good times ...Edited by brettjv - 2/24/11 at 8:13am
