Don't listen to the people who will say that you need a quad to game adequately... Your OCed C2D will run 90% of games just fine.

Obviously, as more games come out that are written for multi-core CPUs, your chip will start to show it's limitations a bit more but for now you should be ok.

Just don't expect to get great fps in bc2.. if you're big into it then I suggest a quad.

This.

Not denying the fact that alot of ppl with same card as mine get MUCH higher fps. But changing gpu gives better results than changing cpus.
Both of you have nowhere near the GPU power he has. He will be limited to about 50-60% of of his cards potential. Also Crysis doesn't use more than 2 cores AFAIK.

While I hated most of your posts, this one totally made up for it. Completely true. For anything above HD 5870/GTX 470, you have to go i5/7. The old 775 quads do not have the frequency and single core perf needed today.

Take all this from a guy with an E8200 @ 3.8 GHz. I'm CPU limited when my HD 5850 is OC'ed (equal to an HD 5870) in SC2, BO, Dirt 2, F1 2010, BC2, Red Faction Guerrilla, Metro 2033 (Yes, Metro...) and probably other games I haven't tested. Of course that isn't @ max settings in all of them (which would be an obvious GPU limit for some), but rather the max settings I can go with playable FPS (50+ in most of 'em). A better CPU and I'd be able to push all these games further with playable framerates (except Metro, but I'd get better framerates).

All this will be even worse with an E4600 and an HD 6950.

A dual core will limit his card but I think people are blowing it out of proportion. The new GPU and the C2d will run those games fine, I would wait and upgrade to an sandy bridge build or whatever as they have better performance per clock. Your CPU will only limit you in games that demand CPU power and most games depend more on your card at high settings, unless they're a bad console port.

Yes it will limit your GPU though.

Upgrading to a quad will not give you the boost you would hope to see though. Its the major architecture change of going from core 2 to iX that gives the most benefit.
This.

However, we have to take into consideration the fact that the OP's Core 2 Duo was a low-end chip even when it came out, not to mention a 65nm one.

Getting a E8x00 Core 2 Duo would feed his single GPU no problem, and still be able to game decently for the next couple of years.

Games are nowhere close to leaving dual core behind. Supporting quads? Yes, but that doesn't mean duals won't cut it.

They will.

Thread Starter
Here's what I've gathered from this thread so far:

You'll be fine gaming now with your CPU, but you arent pulling the full potential from your card.

Buy a Quad and be happy.

Move to a new platform and experience the powa.

I've got two options here, I could make the jump to a high end 775 quad in a week or two (thinking the Q9550 or X3360 running @ 4GHz) or I could sit tight for a couple of months, be happy with what I've got and eventually make the jump to a Sandy Bridge or Bulldozer (if applicable) platform in due time.

I don't do alot of intensive things on my computer, gaming is as rough as it gets and I've only recently started considering that. Other than gaming it endures hours of web browsing and text editors aswell as the occasional photoshop adventure, everything has been running fine.

If a 4GHz quad is going to keep me sailing smooth for a year or two then I'll go down that path, if not then it's time to bite the bullet and hand over some real cash I guess.
