Q8400 won't overclock at all!!!

Thread Starter
I've always been overclocking by CPUs for the last 15 years, but this Q8400 happened to be a tough cookie! No matter what Bus speed I set it simply ignores it and runs at stock Core speed 2.66. Well, it can run on lower clock, but not higher, not even 1 MHz more. How is it possible? Multiplier is partially locked and only can change between 6x and 8x values. So no matter what bus sped is set the only overclocking occurs for memory, but not CPU. Asus AI also can't do anything. I have another older E7400 2.80 and that one goes 3.40 easy. The BIOS is up to date.

So what is the cause? Any chances to overclock Q8400 ?

Thank you

Did you set the voltage higher? You have to set more than just the bus.

I, myself, am running a P5Q and a Q8400 with a TRUE. I'm happy at 3.8Ghz.

That would require 475MHz FSB. Are you Prime95 Large FFT's stable at that FSB? Normally this would require advanced GTL settings.

Have you tried updating the bios? You should be able to hit 400 FSB without much effort. Make sure to lower the memory speed if needed.

Can you show us screenshots of CPU-Z while your chip is under load? Also, what settings do you have enabled in your bios?

The answer was as always simple, but who would know. There is a settings in BIOS called CPU TM Function. When I disable one I'm able to do overclocking. Interestedly that E7400 CPU didn't care about this.

Now this CPU is a little tricky to overclock. Seems like best approach is manual overclocking. Before Ai feature was making E7400 (2.8Ghz) go +20% (~3.4Ghz) overclock. This Q8400 (2.66GHz) is not stable at +8% (~3Ghz). I like that ASUS EPU-6 engine utility as it underclocks and overclocks CPU as needed keeping my CPU fan most time quiet (for instance I barely hear 2 feet away from my Termaltake V9 Black case).

Is there any FAQ on BIOS options on this forum explaining some newer settings and best practices on overclocking?

Thank you everyone!

They hit 3.2 pretty easy on the P5Q boards, make sure everything is up to date and you've set everything up properly.

EDIT: what heatsink are your running? they can handle 50 loops on intelburn @ 3.5ghz on these boards
