i5-2500k vs i7-950??

Thread Starter
debating what to get next... what do u guys think would be be better?
mostly just for gaming..

i was leaning towards the i5 because its a little cheaper and can clock higher from what i hear.. but some people are telling me the i7 is better and id have tripple channel ram, dunno how much better that would be.

overall what would be better'?

SB hands down...

The i5-2500k will have better memory performance than the i7-950 even with it's triple channel memory.

Triple channel ram doesn't really help. The i5-2500k is faster clock for clock, overclocks further and consumes less power all while costing less. Easy choice IMO.

The 2500k is based on the newer Sandy Bridge architecture, which can clock far higher, takes less power, creates far less heat and performs a lot higher per clock.

Don't even consider i7-Gen 1 chips.

If you plan on running more than 2 GPU's and hyper-threading then go for the 950 as it has more PCIE lanes, if not, then go for the i5-2500k, they o/c pretty heavily for most people and would be a less expensive upgrade meaning that you could put that $$ towards better graphics cards.

Don't make me laugh.

Every benchmark proves that the extra lanes are utterly worthless.

If you get the i7-950, you will regret it.

Bizz wrong.

SB is fast enough and the bandwidth is high enough that it is as good or better than a 1366 system when both are using tri sli.

Furthermore the i5-2500k is as good or better than the i7-950 in multi-threaded apps.

Games like faster MHz, been that way for a while... the 2500k is all you need for a gaming rig, get some 1600 or better ram with tight timings and you will be good to go.

Only problem is you have to wait....

Main reason I got a 950 instead of waiting is because I got a nice trade deal.... I am happy with my 950, and it will hold me over til IB comes...

I agree.

I say wait for Ivy-Bridge 8-core.
