Should I bother getting a better card? - Page 4

If you are using it as a media machine only then don't bother. That machine has reached a point where it is not going to be productive to upgrade it.

I played Gears of War when I newly got this system and it worked alright but not medium. Take note that I'm using Quad Cores at 2.4Ghz before but I don't think it will bottleneck my old GPU and I won't bother checking the game again because I overclocked my processor to 3.2Ghz. Its because mainly if I get a good GPU I'll have big boost on FPS. It also doesn't mean if you get a GPU you'll get big boost. It also doesn't always mean if you overclock then you'll get a good performance. Sometimes but not always. New processors have better capabilities. Look how the i3 is still a dual core but still performs very well than a normal dual core.

I'm telling you this. Even if those processor will work on your motherboard don't spend money on it still. Its not worth getting a processor on that board. Its either you get a new i3, motherboard with integrated graphics, and a 2GB stick of RAM and use your old GPU and sell what you can from the rest also keep the hard drive. Also AMD alternative is good or buy something used but reliable. I'm sure many people are selling since there are new hardware out there.

+1 to what he said.

I'm very sure you are using an ordinary non branded one since its an old PC. You need to have a reliable power supply or else one day it will die then the rest of your PC will die with it or by chance some will survive.

Good luck with your plan.

Buy a cheap AMD cpu and mobo combo, sell the DDR (you can get $60 + shipping for all of that ram) You can get $10 + shipping for the CPU, giving you $70 to work with.

Thread Starter
Now that I know what I should be looking for, I think I'll just migrate to a different MoBo that supports a better CPU, but can also accommodate all my current internals. Hopefully..., I can even find one that has BIOS overclocking.

I've never been one to build a PC before, but this thread has given me some ideas. Thanks.

Thread Starter

I don't know now. It seems some of the people who were saying the 9800GT card will work great with a P4 3+ GHz might be right. (I have no use for fraps)

Now I'm confused again. Should I go for the card, with immediate benefit? Or... should I plan a few months down the road, and go with one of these motherboards?

Intel® - Essential Series Micro ATX Motherboard 800/1066/1333MHz (Socket 775)
MSI - Micro ATX Desktop P4/Coreâ„¢2 Duo/Quad Motherboard (Socket LGA 775)

Both should accommodate everything I have in my current PC, with the exception of the RAM. Why I would have to wait a few months to upgrade my P4 to a multi-core, the RAM, and graphics card.
