Hey everyone,

Finally decided to start folding and just wanted to say hello
A lot of my relatives have passed away due to cancer, so I am dedicating this to them!

I'm running the client on both my CPU and GPU in my sig rig.
I will also be running it on my PS3 occasionally.

I'm also thinking about running it on an old Dell Dimension 2400 that is just collecting dust at the moment. If I leave the side panel off, would I be ok temp wise? Also is there anyway I could monitor the progress of it via HFM.NET on my main rig?

Hello and welcome to folding.
As far as the 2400, I don't know. Just make sure to clear that dust collection off and it should be fine.

You can monitor the Dell on your main rig, you just need to set it up through the network in HFM. If you can't figure out how to do that there is a guide in the essentials topic, I would think. The essentials thread is stickied at the top.

That 2400 will not produce much PPD, if I remember correctly the most you will get is 500 PPD.
Is that a regular P4 or with HT? EIther way if it has a PCI-E slot the best thing you can do is stick a GPU card on it.

Its easy to setup up HFM to pick up all your clients, just share your folders from the Dell through the network to your main rig and add the clients on HFM.

Thank you for the advice guys, it seems running it on the P4 alone would not be worth it.

Here are some CPU-Z screenshots of my Dell Dimension 2400.

I'd like to switch out the motherboard with one that has PCI-E x16 support so I can use it as a secondary folding rig. Could anyone recommend me one that's still available, despite it being old tech? I'll probably end up grabbing a GTS 250 or 450 to use in it.

I also have a machine with an AMD Athlon XP 2100+ CPU that has an AGP slot.. would that be any good to fold with? What would be a decent AGP card?

Sorry for all the questions!

Any dual core Althon board with a PCI-E express is good. For straight GPU folding that is.

I believe AGP are all pre-Fermi and don't fold. I started out the same path with one of my P4s... bought a socket 775 board for it. Ended up buying a used E8500 core 2 duo off another OCN'r and then put the P4 back into its original sony motherboard. Now, that cpu+motherboard is my "F4" rig and exclusively folding a 9800gt video card.

Check out my HFM stats... I just went through buying all kinds of GPUs for folding. I also bought an AM3 socket 780FX board just to run 4 GPUs on it. Watch out, this stuff is addictive. I'd suggest carefully planning out your folding acquisitions. In your current situation (and only if you have a PSU with the juice) I think you can find a 775 board with PCIe slot for under $50. Then try to score a GTX460 for < $100. Bump up the shader clock on the 460 and that'll get you 11k ppd.

Otherwise, I'd say go big on a CPU. My current sig rig is my 100% all the time desktop at work. It also folds 24/7 and I notice no ding in performance. Also, my PPD are inline with other peoples', so my desktop use doesn't ding the folding's performance. I got the cpu, board, and RAM from another OCNr used for $350. It's the x3440 at the top of my HFM.

Just realised I have another Pentium 4 folding... the "AP P4" running the GTS250. I also have a low profile Sparkle GT430 that I'll sell for $55. It works on slim computers and/or computers without a big PSU. P4s aren't worth folding... they get 450-500 ppd per thread. The 2100+ AMD X2 is barely worth running SMP on. I've got a few AMD Athlon X2 boxes. They do their best running a GPU.

AGP do fold, but finding one isn't easy I know a few people in the marketplace has sold folding capable AGP cards that were half decent.
I wouldn't go out and spend more than $25.
