Bottleneck a 5870??

Thread Starter
Will my Phemon II x555 dual core @4.0Ghz bottleneck a Sapphire 5870 2GB version? For games on 1 monitor 1920x1080 (right now but looking to expand after this purchase)

I just bought one from newegg (Awesome deal right now only 179.99 after rebate from 399.99). It may be a bit overkill for my sig rig but the price was to good to ignore. Will my processor be holding me back with my current gaming situation?? I realize if I was running eyefinity etc 4 cores would make a significant difference. With only 1 monitor will there be a dramatic difference?

I will take any suggestions on what i should or can do with a card that has 2GB VRAM????

In games that take advantage of 3+ cores YES it will hold your HD5870 back. Just wait until your new card arrives, throw it in and see if your games are even dropping under your monitors refresh rate. Since you are at 4Ghz you might be fine.

An example, this is with the HD5870.

By the looks of that chart the i5 may even be bottlenecking it some. Wonder how much better an i7 would perform against the top on that list?? So even like a x955 or x965 would be holding it back from it's max potential??

Yeah but that's already getting into really high FPS that won't even matter unless you have a 120hz monitor.

Here's the high end processors with the HD5870 if you're interested:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...d_6.html#sect0

If you click on their CPU tab and scroll down you will see that they did a test of all CPU's from budget to high end in three different reviews.

Cool man thanks a lot. So I could increase my FPS by 2.5x by getting a 980x...that's funny to me!! Was looking into a x955 or x965 next.
Think my power supply is enough??

Its worth noting, the higher the resolution eg yours @ 1080p will put the bottleneck more on the card than the cpu. Above rez puts more strain on cpu as low and lots of fps.

That chart does not do justice to some CPUs when OCed..That chart would change quite a bit...Its obviously a chart with cpus at stock clocks.

Noted. Although there isn't much size difference between 1680x1050 and 1920x1080. Only about twice the difference of 1920x1080 and 1920x1200..

Ya with my 4.0Ghz I really only need a constant 60fps at max settings 1080p. I like to play with vsync on anyways as screen tearing drives my insane.
