First time server build

Thread Starter
Well I want to set up a server for storage for data, music, movies and whatever else I need to save. LOL

I have an XFX 680iLT MB, an E8400 cpu, 2GB of DDR2 6400 ram, a case with a PC&C 750 watt psu, and a cheap CD unit. I was going to use the 680i MB (partly because I have it) since it has the gigabyte ethernet as well as sata and usb 2.

I was thinking of using a couple of Samsung F3 1TB 7200 drives to start with and using SyncBack software to mirror one active drive over to the other for backup. Then add drives to it as I can afford them. Or would the F4 5400 drives work okay with this?

I was wondering what others thought of this approach? Also would FreeNas be alright or should I look at Windows server to run it?

Would I be able to use this set up as an HTPC and if so what else would I need to do it?

I guess it would be nice to be able to have the storage and a HTPC all in one if that is possible?
I do have a spare GTS450 video card that I can use with the above parts if need be.
I'm out of work and have parts laying around and would only have to buy the drives right now for a storage machine but it would be nice to see it an HTPC is possible without too much expense in the future. Otherwise I will just build an NAS storage machine for now and then I guess I could start converting my VHS tapes into digital (I have over 100 VHS movies) so what will I need to convert them?

I would appreciate any help on which way to go. Needless to say this will be all brand new to me but fun to do at any rate.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Bill

I'd go with FreeNAS. It supports RAID out of the box (drive mirroring) so there should be no need for extra software. The F4 drives should also be fine, especially if you run them in RAID. I'd say your network is the choking point, not the drives.

Media Center + NAS? Should be possible. I would be surprised if XBMC didn't have a Samba server.

Since you mention you're new to it, but think it's a fun project: why not try both solutions?

Thanks.
I forgot to mention that my main machine has 2 gigabyte ports and that I have a dlink 5 port gigabyte switch that I can use to connect things together as well.

Well, as soon as I figure out what the heck I am doing and what I have to connectg together. HA

Win 7 x64, with MCE. You can set it up to make files available on the net too. Easy to set up, strong networking right out of the box.

I would buy a few 1tb drives and get a sata controller card as well so you can add more hard drives in the future. You may want to go with 2 tb drives over all, and use something small like a 40 or 80 gb drive for the os and any other applications like virus protection. In WHS, the OS drive isn't included in the storage pool.

Personally, I'd hold off on the controller card for now as long as you have a way to backup all the drives or stick with RAID1 (not sure if mirrored drives can be transfered to a different controller-especially the move from software raid to hardware). Though if you're not planning on expanding beyond what your motherboard can handle, I'd go with 4 drives in RAID10 for a speed boost and true mirroring. RAID 5 with 3 drives would work as well, but if one fails, the missing information would have to be rebuilt on the fly from the good data plus the parity, which would bog everything down until you can replace the drive and let it fully rebuild itself.

I definitely agree with keeping the OS separate. No reason to keep it with the data and make it easier to play with without disturbing your raid configuration.

Thanks for the ideas so far (I think).

So would I be better off to set this up as an NAS for now and get my storage requirements out of the way and then build an HTPC later on?
I figure that I have everything to do an NAS right now with the exception of the hard drives and I am going to order a couple within the next day or so once I find a good deal on them.
I also figured that using FreeNas would allow me to use the CD that I have and a USB stick instead of having to use another HD for an OS? I have only burned the FreeNas software onto a CD as of now so I don't know anything about it yet. LOL
I do have an old IDE 40GB drive I could use if I have too.

I was just thinking that if I could do an HTPC/Storage system in one box then it would sort of kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak.
I'm not a gamer so the only thing the HTPC will be for is web surfing and probably watching movies. It would be nice to think future uses though if possible.
I also realize that this E8400 and 680iLT MB are probably not the best for an HTPC system?
I look forward to more ideas.
Thanks
Bill
