It's "okay". You should have short stroked those bad boys to 60-100GB for some serious horsepower. Not bad for such a large partition though.

You can make a 100Gb short stroke and another partition of 800Gb for data.

but doing that when I access something on the data partition, surely that'd negate any effect of shortstroking as the head would be accessing the inner parts of the disk?

It's still going to be raided. Should only be slightly slower than your current setup. If at all. While the short stroke will be faster
